    Broken needles are usually attributed to lack of lube in the speedo cable core. The core is like a spring and can kinda wind up and spring loose causing the needle to slam against the stop. I use Vaseline to lube the core.

    :confused::confused:
    I only do that when alone on the back roads of west Texas when heading to the cabin. But last month the wife and I got hit by a 18 wheeler when in the Avalanche. Fortunately he missed the back bumper and just caught the side. Now we take a different route to avoid all the oil trucks in the Pecos oil boom area. No good spots to hit the high speeds now so been deciding those high speed days are over. :confused:

    Fairly unlikely, IMHO.

    60 mph is pretty close to typical top end in any case, but I'd check points and timing settings before carb. Get things in spec, in correct FSM sequence, before chasing unicorns.

    "90% of carb problems are electrical."

    This. Or a core/sheath that is ragged from wear, and snagging.

    That is the best quote I have read! I am studying up on points right now. I'm good with the rest of the tune up procedures, but my knowledge of points and timing is not the best. I have some time as it is cold and rainy nonstop lately.

    Only takes a few minutes to do, once you grasp the principles.
    Pretty simple really, but becoming a forgotten art.

    Used to be a pre-requisite to get your ManCard.

    Well, so much for the repair. On my way to the inspection appointment the needle went crazy and snapped off again. I think I need a replacement cable as re-lubing it did not work out after all.

    Google "vintage speedometer repair" IIRC dry graphite was the recommended speedometer cable lube, a common fix for a bouncing needle. Disconnect at speedo, dump dry graphite in the open end of the cable, reconnect cable and drive awhile, repeat as necessary. Warning" Wear disposable gloves, face shield and rain gear when applying, this stuff is like antiseize, one drop will cover a human body"

    www.scottspeedometer.com restored my '55 CJ5 speedo with broken needle. I don't remember the cost (on purpose cause I don't want to remember how much I have in this jeep).
