Oddfire V6, Could Timing Be Off?

    I had my V6 rebuilt as a long block and I put it back together. Not my profession. It now has the classic backfire and popping. I had an old car shop do some other work and they decided it likely is out of time on the rebuild. It does run when the timing is very advanced, the timing mark is almost straight up but dies when bringing it towards the timing marks. I am pretty sure the carbs ok, and it has an HEI on it. It is also running very rich.
    Looking for opinions before I tear into the timing cover.

    You could rotate the engine by hand and ensure TDC is at the 0* mark on the timing. Once you do that, verify the HEI is A) the proper one for an Odd Fire, and B) has post #1 done properly on the short pickup in the cap.

    I'm guessing the distributor is not stabbed in correctly. Probably off a tooth on the gear.

    AS Warloch said make sure the No#1 piston is all the way up on compression stroke first then do as Keys5a said on the HEI.

    Be sure you are using the right distributor terminal for number 1. It matters on an oddfire. Also be sure you have the correct cap.

    I appreciate all the replys, I am in and out this weekend.
    I had it running great before the rebuild. I am sure the cap is correct and it was set at on the compression stoke at TDC.
    The rotor points to the short tab just to the left of the wire terminal plug
    It starts and runs pretty good but has has a snapping and popping back fire that just is not correct.

    In doing some more testing I found that if I disconnect #5 the back fire mostly stops and the number 3 header pipe is not getting has hot as the 1.
