So a little background first. I have inherited my dads 69 cj5 with the dauntless v6. It was in the southwest at 6500 ft for 40+ years, before going to Pennsylvania for a couple years before coming to me in s. Georgia. Engine is mostly original with the exception of the starter and fuel pump, and has 33,000 original miles on it.

Recently, I've been having issues with it popping and backfiring, stalling out. Had fuel pump/filter replaced at this point, and now it will turn over, and die as soon as you give it gas. I'm stumped, and need some help!

Rotor and cap are good, and I'm getting good spark. Only thing I can think of is the carb?

It seems like the carb is flooding when it would stall. Now with the new fuel pump, as soon as you give it gas it dies...

Sounds like some crud got into the carb after changing the fuel pump and filter. The back firing and popping previously would be a timing issue.

Not to confuse the issue, but I had a very temperamental Dauntless that got a lot better with converting to the Petronix.

I like the Pertronix set up (I have one on my Jeep) but it doesn't do anything that a new set of properly adjusted points does.

So - you went from 6900 feet to what, about 250? Timing and Carb will both need adjusted for it to work right. You will also need to verify the fuel pressure especially if you swapped the pump. That is where I would start.

Yeah, according to my uncle, this particular carb has always been a nuisance and quite temperamental...

Have you checked your accelerator pump is giving a good full squirt? You might need to completely clean the carb, especially all the very small passages in the venturi that might be gummed up.

I agree with you, but the points made today don't stay new for very long. I really like Pertronix products.
