can som help me to understand what is causing this horrible whine while in 3rd gear. As a either press the clutch or let off the accelerator it stops. Is it a bearing or gear or something else entirely.

I’m not sure what could be the culprit and I don’t want to ask a question that I probably already know the answer to but you are full of oil right? Both tranny and tcase?

Sounds maybe like a bearing starting to go, complaining when under load.

Strange that it is only in 3rd gear. I filled the oil to halfway up the gears. No change. I really don’t want to have to learn how to rebuild a transmission. Unfortunately there is only one transmission place within 50 miles of me that works on manual transmissions. I called and it is $800 to start.

Could it just be classic D18 gear whine?

edit - I was able to listen to your video. Sounds like you have two things going on: standard D18 gear whine, and then a second noise that is more of a clatter or clacking (?) sound which would be more concerning.

My initial comment was just to let you know that some amount of whine is pretty standard with the D18. It does get worse over time as the intermediate shaft and roller bearings wear. Knowledgeable members on here can probably walk you through a way identify where the whine is coming from, how to differentiate what I hear as two different sounds, and what to do about it (starting with checking gear oil levels). Although I don't want you to ignore a serious problem, I will also say that I was quite shocked at how loud the D18 whine really was when I first got my ecj5 (although there was no clacking sound). I was accustomed to either modern chain driven cases, or in my previous CJs, they were all later model cases that were direct drive to the rear wheels as opposed to through drive in the D18. I rebuild both my T14 and my D18 and the amount of whine decreased only slightly, but I had some other concerns that needed to be addressed as well. Get some suggestions for how to test or identify the issue from members here, and then try to be very procedural in how you can rule out different possibilities until you know what the issue is. Good luck...

Try it in low range and see if there is any difference in tone. If yes, it's the t-case. (That's what it sounds like to me.)

The transmission will most likely make more noise in first or second and be quiet in third, since third gear is just shooting the power straight-through.

Sounds like you have an exhaust leak too.

We need a longer video with all you going through all 3 gears. That is definitely not a standard gear whine. It sounds horrible. Have you had the cover off of the transmission and inspected it with no oil in it?

I will try to get a longer video tomorrow. Just got home from daddy/daughter date. Pizza with my favorite girl in the world. (Crust-less for me). I have had the cover off today and noticed there was rust on the bearings where the cane shifter rides.

Quite possible when I swapped the motor. Original was the normal 8.5” clutch. The replacement motor had 9.25” heavy duty clutch. I did take the clutch off the flywheel during the swap because I didn’t realize they were different at first. My bad for being impatient.

was wondering if that was the clacking noise I was hearing - my first thought was exhaust leak as well.
