Any time, under normal circumstances your engine cannot maintain operating temperature that should be considered overheating. It may be minimal or it may be severe.

What temperature thermostat do you have? I assume you're using a coolant mixture?

You should be able to open the hood and rev the engine to see if the lower hose is collapsing under suction.
Like Glenn asked, what are you running for coolant? Do you have any water wetter in the system? Water wetter wont keep you from boiling over, but I have witnessed it lower overall operating temperature by 10 or so degrees on several race cars.
Is that a 4 blade fan? What is the diameter?

    It’s a 180* thermostat. What would be “operating temperature? “ is 210 overheating ?

210 with a 180 t stat is fine. The coolant has to reach 180 prior to opening.
Did you happen to drill a single 1/8" hole in the flat inboard of the the gasket and outboard the water passage of the t stat?
It allows a small amount of flow to assist with equal heating of the block and heads.

Operating temperature is what the engine is designed to operate at. If 180 is the proper thermostat then it should operate around that temperature range...maybe 175 to 185 or 190? 210 is too far from normal range

Thermostat does not fully open until it's about 20* above rated temp. Rated temp is coolant temp when it starts to open.
Also it's common for a closed cooling system with operating pressure to exceed 212* without boiling. 50/50 mix of coolant and water boils at about 220* (at sea level) a 15# rad cap will raise it to about 250* (or 2*/# rating of cap used). Now the higher elevation you go it boils at a lower temp

That's a new one to me. I've never seen the temperature range that far in anything I've driven.

I've seen it often. Driving in summer heat in mountainous terrain, especially when towing, and more-so with an automatic transmission.

    From Stant.com FAQ:
    Thermostat Temperatures
    • Thermostats have a “rated” temperature such as 180F or 195F
    • This is the temperature the thermostat will start to open, give or take 3 degrees
    • The thermostat fully open about 15-20 degrees above its rated temperature
    • Many thermostats have a “jiggle pin” or “check valve” that allows trapped air in the cooling system to pass through the thermostat and be released from the system.
    • If a Stant thermostat does not have a jiggle pin, it will have a "bleed notch” or other method of removing air from the system.

You sure your temp sender and gauge are matched, as Glenn recommended early on?

Also, have you tried advancing your idle timing by a couple degrees? That alone should make it run a bit cooler.

Yes the sender came with the gauge -AutoMeter. I have not advanced the timing but that is another option to try - what are the possible side affects?

A little more advance may run a little stronger, maybe slightly better vacuum, and cooler. Will produce more NOX out the tail pipe. Do you know your all-in advance at high RPM? Could end up with a smidge too much advance at high speed, but I doubt if 2 deg extra idle advance will put you over the edge

Hey Scott, I just came across this on CL and had to share. If you’re still overheating don’t worry! Do like this guy did and cut out your grill completely and put an electric fan in there! That’ll fix it![IMG]

Only way I think that’s acceptable is on the Jeeps Rat Patrol was based off of!

Whut in tarnation!? On top of that fan job..
Chevy square body rear lights. Van steering box? (top mounted rear swing)
The best is the rod end on the pitman arm, the nut has no locking capability (top lock, nylon locker, etc). Enjoy the ride when that nut backs off. Probably be a deal if you whittle him down to $1500 and put the remaining $2500 in a life insurance policy.

There better be a good story behind that cut out grille.....like
    I lost a bet......
So yea that’s how drunk we were.....
We were broke down in Alaska and I had to rip the grille bars out to kill a grizzly
