Finally got off my arse and began working on my bumper to install my rebuilt Belleview winch, here's a few pics of the winch ready to go... not sure how many winches they made of these but my S/N seems to indicate they made quite a few. If anyone has production numbers I would be interested in seeing them.. 20170417_153807.jpg 20170511_140407.jpg 20180903_144305.jpg 20180903_144335.jpg 20181223_160424.jpg

Started out with a 8X8 square tube cut 32"long. found out it was not enough metal height to have all the room for mounting bolts and the lower bend on the channel. Bought a 12 x 12x 16 1/4 plate off epay for a mounting plate and plan to use it instead. Just need to finish up drilling bolt holes and trimming the top angles of the 12 x 12 plate for cosmetic reasons. May cut the lower angle off the first plate and weld it on top otf the new bumper for a stiffener. Guess I need to do a mock up to which I like better. The plasma cutter is at another jeep buddies house so it sounds like time for a road trip. 20181223_160524.jpg 20181231_155536.jpg 20181231_155536.jpg 20181231_155603.jpg

Bolted on my fairlead after cutting hole thru new channel bumper for it. This morn gathered up some hardware to bolt the bumper plate to winch so I could layout the cable hole so the cable will not rub or hit the edge while using winch. i may have the lower winch mount bolt holes drilled into the bumper and make up some tube 20190501_093933.jpg 20190501_085901.jpg spacers to fit between mounting plate and rear of bumper.

Can't wait to see how this turns out. Is there a rule of thumb about where the hole for the fairlead is situated in relation to the cable drum? What I mean is, is the hole in the mount centered on the horizontal centerline of the winch cable drum, or is it cheated toward the side that the cable unwraps off the drum?

Not that I have found, i am not centering the fairlead on the winch spool but "cheating it" as you say to the lower side for this particular winch. with the winch being bolted to the rear side of the bumper and the fairlead bolted to the front of the bumper. Bumper is 2" deep channel and using the adult bev calculator that I have says the rear cutout must be larger vertically than the front hole for the fairlead with the width slightly more than the winch spool. I think the ratio is two beers per hour for the hole to be designed. Safety first of course, no beer during the actual cut though.

I think I'm gonna add some extra cuts on the front plate to kinda mimic the pic of the "Gas Station jeep. Just a rectangular plate is boring, maybe something like this or maybe straight cuts instead of the dog bone look...hmmm. I was wrong it was 3 beers per hour today

    How about something like this?
FYI- Oh the old channel bumper I had was from Bethehem Steel and had their logo rolled into the inside. Bet this new piece is some Chinese steel.

Maybe the dogbone idea would look better if you could make the curves the same radius as the curves at the bottom (or top) of the grill slats.

Finally got the bumper plate (didn't modify to match the radius of the grill cutouts) welded to the bumper and bolted it up to the frame. Wow my first bead looked like **** (been a few years) should have started with the bottom weld first. The grinder is ready for duty. Heat from welding bow'd the mount plate, but I have a shim to fix that. It's a tight fit into the space between stock bumper location and the grill. I'm gonna have to move the bumper out an inch or so to better fit the winch into the space. At least that is where I'll begin.

20200110_165126.jpg 20200110_165806.jpg 20200110_165112.jpg I cut two 3" long spacer blocks from some scrap 1"x2" .125 wall rectangular tubing to fit in the channel bumper and between the frame end and the 4" channel to move the bumper forward 1". Also cut upper and lower 2" wide tabs to weld to the bumper and bend down to the frame horns for locating new holes for mounting the bumper. Mocked it all up and now I have 1" between the lever and the grill. Today i finished drilling my mounting holes for tow hooks and the other frame attach holes for the bumper.

Bolted it all together and now it's time to install controls and wind 125' of cable, using the cable that come on the winch when I bought it for $75 three years or so ago.

20200114_113111.jpg Off work today for plumber to replace leaking service line coming to house. So I had some free time to back the jeep out and laid out 5/16 winch cable ( paced it off at 166 normal steps) and installed jumper cables and rigged up a tensioner from two short 2x4s and two clamps. Old cable was in great condition, installed new hook and clamps, gave the ol gal 12v and it quickly wound up all 150ft of 5/16 cable. :bananatool:

What did you use to clean up the aluminum like that? I need to redo an old Bellvue i have on the shelf and am curious how much it takes to make the aluminum housing look like thaT?

Bead blasted with 120 grit aluminum oxide media. This is the way it looked when I bought it for cheap. 20170417_153838.jpg

20200120_151526.jpg I ordered a continuous duty solenoid (500amp NVX) to replace the knife switch that normally operates the power to the winch. I bought the two control cables one locking (napa p/n 731-1104) and one non-locking (napa p/n 731-1106) and a momentary push button switch to power up the winch. Also bent up a mounting plate for the dash. I attached the engage/disengage cable to the winch and found out I needed to tweak the tension on the winch lever detent ball on the winch housing so the cable could operate properly.
I am thinking of installing 1/0 gauge battery cables to complete the power circuit. What size cables do the 8274s use?

NOTE: the Napa cable were found to be too light duty for me. I bought these instead from Mil Supply

Got out in the garage again and installed winch controls and wired up the winch with battery cables i ordered online. I installed the solenoid and push button circuit to control the winch. More rain moving in for the next few days, so my youtube video will have to wait.

    But the install is complete!
