Have been busy rebuilding the T90 transmission. Now that it is all completed. I am turning my attention to the transfer-case.
I have heard of removing the "Lock-Out Pin " on this case to allow 2wheel " Low "...
    Anyone know of this..? ( 1948 CJ3 ).
Just remove the Pin, Spring & Ball..? Replacing the bolt then..?
My other project runs a T98 with a DANA-20 and have 4 & 2 wheel "low" without any modifications.
    Thanks,

    George

It's not the ball and spring of the shifter but in that channel between the shift rails is a steel horse pill that just needs forgotten. The ball and spring are needed to keep the gears where you put them when shifting.

Yes, just remove the pill. You need to keep the detent balls and springs.

your going to have to remove front output/shifter housing to remove the pill
it's locked in place between the shift rods

Ok.... I really needed to de-rust the shift rails & replace the two seals anywho.
Replacing the "freeze plugs" on the rear of the engine block...saw one that looked bad.
Made a mandrel on the lathe to set the new ones.
Also had to make a pilot bushing as my setup ( Chev S-10, 2.8L V6 to the T90 ) is weird.
Everything ready...Just got to wait out the rain down pour.
    Thanks..!

I may take this out before re-installing the engine / trans back in.
Got on the lathe this morning...made the Pilot bushing & a tool to install.
Replaced all the water freeze plugs on the rear of the engine.
Re-installed the flywheel.... installed the clutch setup & bellhousing.
Installed my machined up adapter to the bell for the T90...
Mated the T90 to the D18...
Have a question on the nut that holds the output gear of the T90 to the D18...
    Before installing the nut...
One of the T90's had just a common flat-washer….the 2nd trans ( one I rebuilt ) had a "stepped" washer under the nut...?
Does it matter...??? ( Using the "nyloc" nut from Novak ).

Or just leave it alone and use front hub locks to use 2wd low?
It's my understanding something could be damaged if not shifted correctly after pill remove mod???

Im pretty sure its just that it puts more torque on the rear end so its more likely to snap an axle or whatever

I do this with my 58' 4whl truck to get it up the hill in the driveway ( up hill ) through the gated areas and around my boat.
Being in the "low range " allows " slow moving " to maneuver & less clutch slipping.
More so to save the clutch...which with the T98 ( a beast ) to pull out to service the clutch.... :)

Removing the interlock on a 20 could cause damage, since the shift rods activate each axle separately (ie allows front in low and rear in high, or vice-versa). With the 18, I think there is no configuration that can damage it directly since one rod is high-low and the other is 2WD-4WD. However, you can put a lot of force on the rear axle in 2WD low on pavement. Just be careful.

    Got it....
Years ago I was pulling a stump with the truck... Made the mistake of when high was stalling the engine.
I dropped the T98 in " Low Range 1st gear "....hit the auxiliary 2-speed box to compound to even lower.
Started to pull the stump until I blew the front gearset ring-gear and twisted the rear axles...
    A painful...and expensive lesson.
