I won't be home till tomorrow night to look up those casting numbers, but a '65 CJ5 shouldn't have a Dauntless from the factory. The V6 was introduced for the '66 model year. The best number is the block casting number behind the left cylinder head on the flange where the bellhousing mounts.

What do your engine mounts look like, that would tell the story on originality.

I will gather more pictures today. Engine is painted blueish/green.

Thank you so far for the info.

How do you decipher the VIN?

None. A November '65 build date is a 1966 model.

Not sure you need the Vin to verify the motor?...........for the motor get a small wire brush and on the flat block surface on the passengers side where the head bolts down to the block between cylinders 2 & 4 there is a code stamped there on the flat block surface.....a few Capital letters and a few numbers..........if it's dirty in there you need to clean it up with a brush.........take that info and look at the stuff I posted in #3 above................that code will tell you what you have.

Not sure what your plans are for the motor........but it looks as if it's been setting along time and would have to come out of there for some freshening up!

simplest explanation is that it kinda looks like this is a 66 model year (11/65 production date) - and thus its quite possible its the native v6 225 that would have been available as an option. Those motor mounts look correct for an original v6.

Was just curious about the VIN decoding.

I did find the block between the cylinders, but could not see any numbers, going to wire wheel it so get a better look.

I plan on freshening up the motor, that is why I wanted to find out what it was so I can order the correct parts.

Firing order suggests it is an odd fire motor.

Thanks to all for the info, still learning these old jeeps...

Your CJ5 is an early '66 model year Jeep, and yes, I'll bet that is the original engine. I'm suprised if it is actually titled as a '65. There's not much to decode on your VIN. 8305 is the prefix for a regular CJ5, open body, the A for V6 engine, and the rest are the serial numbers.

Mine is titled as a 65 and production code was October. I purchased it with the original V6 which was shot beyond repair, but had the stamped code on the block as a 65 V6.
When I order engine parts I need to use 66 as the year.
