    Hey CJers,

I know I'm new here but I'm looking at possibly getting a 1964 CJ-5 Tuxedo Park Mark IV that has a Perkins Diesel engine in it. Was this ever a factory option for the Tuxedo Park Mark IVs?

Basically I'm a small displacement diesel engine enthusiast with Jeeps. My DD is a 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD with a factory turbo diesel 2.8L engine and I might have found a Perkin's Diesel CJ-5 from a friend but I'm trying to confirm the vin number to verify that it was in fact a factory Perkin's Diesel.

I've read the VIN Decoder that has been published on this site and I see that the Perkin's diesel's came with a starting VIN for CJ-5s of 8311 and 8355 however the Tuxedo Mark IVs came with a starting VIN of 8322. Also I've read what the 5th, 6th, and 7th digital of the VIN is suppose to be about the Jeep and it doesn't match anything that is published in that document!

The first 7 digits of this VIN are 8322103

The 8322 confirms it's a Tuxedo Park Mark IV

The 1 which should designate the Body Style doesn't show up in the list

The 0 which should designate the Drive Code doesn't show up in the list

The 3 which should designate the Engine Code doesn't show up in the list

I have the VIN number and trying to decode to find out if it's a factory diesel so I can make a decision if I'm purchasing this Jeep or not. I should say this is my unicorn find. I've always wanted a factory Perkin's Diesel Jeep CJ-5. I normally don't care about engine swaps but I want the VIN to match the engine in this Jeep.

    Thanks
    Grant

Take a good look at the motor mounts. from what I have seen here, the jeep perkins had bosses to mount in a car. the agriculture and industrial versions don't. If it has good looking mounts and nothing weird where the frame mounts are, I would jump now then figure out the swim part otherwise you might lose it.

Does your '64 Tux have column shift or floor shift? Does the dash have the cut out from a column shift?

I personally have never seen or heard of diesel Tuxedo Park, factory or otherwise. Considering what the whole Tuxedo Park line was supposed to be about, more style and comfort, it seems putting a diesel in one would the antithesis of style and comfort for the time.

Interesting none the less and pictures are always welcome. I'm curious to learn more about your Tuxedo Park. If it is indeed a factory installed Perkins, it could be one of a kind. Dealer installed conversion??????

I have never heard of a factory Perkins Tux, but anything is possible. Forget the regular vin decoder for the Tux. It was a separate model. The 8322 prefix establishes it is a Tux, then the next five digits are the serial number, probably beginning with 11XXX in your case.
Now the problem arises. The Perkins Jeeps are again, a separate model. The diesel CJ5 has an 8310 prefix, and the diesel CJ6 has an 8410 prefix. I don't think Kaiser crossed a Perkins and a Tux.
There was a Perkins powered Tux on eBay in the past year in Florida, if I recall, but it was a larger displacement engine than was used by the factory, and it had some fitment issues that still needed to be overcome. Possibly the eBay CJ5a made its way up to Virginia?
If I had to guess, this is likely a poor Tux someone tried shoehorning a Perkins into. I'll bet the dash has the taller cutout for the column shift assy regardless of what trans is in there.

We need pictures of the motor mounts. Does it look like they were original or is there evidence of old mounts cut off and new mounts added...

Wow, you got me going on that one. I have a 64 Tux clone. I bought it from a friend, who bought it from another friend. It had been rebodied with a 71 body, but had most of the Tux components on it including the column shift. I redone it with a donor 66 CJ 5 chassis. I would really like to have a CJ 5 with a Perkins in it. I had a 27 Rolls Royce with a Perkins P6 in it for 35 years, never got it done, sold it about 16 years ago, it was fun to play with. Sure sign of a hack installation?
I thought the larger Perkins that I think is in this Tux weighs in at close to 1000lbs. You could stuff a Detriot V8 in at half the weight and 3 times the power. This was the Tux that was on eBay a while back.
