My parking brake on the TC wouldn't hold a dead fly in a still breeze. Thus I never use it, but it is on the list to 'look' at along with the other 9,000 things on the list. I need to retire like Glenn so I can get started on the list.

When I was still working I knew I had to do things within a certain time frame so I was driven to do them. Now there is always tomorrow....luckily I only have a few things that are actually pressing so I drag my feet at times. Been doing that for 4 years now. Hmmmmm, maybe I should get busy.

I have always stuffed the tranny into reverse on my vehicles with manual transmissions. /after switching off the ignition.
I have never had much faith in the e-brakes holding. Especially if parking on a hill.

I got to throw this in also. I got lucky and learned without incident. The chain in the 1st pic is hooked WRONG. All it takes is a little slack and the hook is free.

I learned from a trucker the correct hookup, many years ago. In the 2nd pic, any slack in the chain would be taken back up without catastrophe. I do this even with ratchet straps. I sometime use a folded piece of cardboard or a rag to prevent chaffing of the strap.

I can't imagine a vehicle, especially non computer, starting on its own. I suppose freak things could happen but very unlikely. Two things that might help if it did, have a rack on front of trailer, and a high tensile strength chain. If it did start the combo of the chain, and the rack would cause the jeep to choke down.
Glenn, i have been retired now for 3 yrs myself. Know exactly where you are coming from...!!

Funny you should mention vehicles starting themselves... that is exactly what my jeep did a few weeks ago. The starter solenoid wire shorted to the wire between the starter and alternator. I was extremely lucky that I forgot to put it in gear like I usually do, because I was underneath the Jeep when it started cranking!

I have been working with heavy equipment for many years. We honestly have a couple hundred pieces of eq. where I work. I have seen a lot happen, that just cant happen.
I did order the battery disconnects for all my Jeeps.

My old CJ5 started cranking on it's own once. During an under hood fire when things started shorting out. I'm just glad it was in neutral as I had enough problems at the time trying to put the fire out without having to chase it down in the process.

Another time a woman stuffed the front of her new Buick Skyhawk under my front bumper in a parking lot (same CJ5). Then got out, opened my door, released the parking brake and put the trans in neutral before calling the cops. I walked up a few minutes later and knew damn well I'd left it in gear with the parking brake on. Cop shows up, she screaming bloody murder about my Jeep rolling over her new car and I'm just like "WTH?". Cop's trying to take my side of the story while she's talking all over everything I say when this little ol' guy shows up and told the officer he'd seen the whole thing. He told how she'd hit my Jeep then messed with it to make it look like my fault. At that point the tears started flowing over how her husband was going to kill her. Heck, at that point, I was in favor of that idea. Cop started writing her all kinds of tickets, got my contact info and the older gentleman's and let me go. When I backed the Jeep off the front of her car, the rubber front end popped back out. Only damage was some paint missing on hers.

I've done my share of learning over the years about being careful, and some of it was from unexpected results of what I'd done. ;)

We were doing an engine swap in my dad's IH dump truck 20-some years ago. We pulled out the bad engine and rolled the truck out of the garage, up a small hill to get it out of the way so we could pull a Scout in for the donor engine. (No engine: putting it in gear won't work.) We put the perfectly functioning e-brake on to hold it in place. As we walked away, we heard a loud, "CHUNK! Click!"

We turned to see what the noise was, and the truck was rolling towards the garage. We both did the obligatory "try to stop the 7000# truck by pushing on it" panic maneuver to no avail, and it crashed into the corner of the door opening, knocking it off the foundation.

I'm not one to believe in ghosts, but boy, that was pushing the limits of my beliefs. We recreated the noise we heard; the "chunk" was the foot pedal slamming back into the resting position, and the only way we could recreate the "click" was to let go of the release handle at full pull.

My folks' property was cheap when they bought it back in the 70's because of all the native folklore surrounding it.

I was standing next to an old kamatsu dozer we had been pushing some breaker rock with. The old machine always loped a little while idling, setting up a vibration. The vibration rattled it right into gear. My neighbor, an older equipment operator calmly stepped on the grouser and rode the track up to the platform where he got in and pulled it into neutral. Slick as could be. If I tried that, I’m so uncoordinated Id be killed.
