[IMG] Where does this mount on the jeep? Is this for a side mount? If so... If I'm looking at it correctly... Then the half with the mounts by the you're would be away from the body... So how does it mount correctly? Thank you

That's for an M38A1 military. Mounts where the tailgate on a CJ is.

    Correct.
    They are quite valuable.

Two small holes are for the reflector.

It will mount on your tailgate, but you need to back up the inside of the tailgate with Oak or some other hardwood.

Then you will also probably want to put a couple of good sized bolt and nuts through the chain latches.
That is how mine is mounted. I have a big hole in the side where the mount used to be until the PO got too close to a tree or something.

Requires the solid back panel. Not intended to be used with a tailgate.

Jeep used this carrier on '73 or newer CJs with the solid back panel. This may be a M38A1 item, considering the holes for a reflector (which the civilian Jeeps did not hae).

Kind of looks like one from ‘70s with solid rear panel.

Ok thanks. Some one posted this wondering. I mentioned in looking for a side mount. They offered it to me. I did not think it was a side mount. You guys are great with your answers. Thank you

As mentioned earlier, your spare tire bracket was designed for mounting on the rear panel of Jeeps. The flat-fender M38 used this bracket on a drop-tailgate that had reinforcing channels on the inside to accommodate both the spare tire and a jerry can. The M38A-1 used this bracket on the rear body panel. Finally, the Renegade from around 1970/71 without a drop-tailgate also used this same bracket. Both the M38A-1 and Renegade had a solid panel in place of a tailgate that could accommodate a rear mounted spare.
I'll guess that yours is from a Renegade because there doesn't appear to be any OD green that should be present if it were originally from a military version.
The uppermost "box" section of yours is close to that which was used for the side-mounted spare your Jeep originally came with. The back side has an extra bend that keeps it from mounting flat to the fender side.

Can I hi-Jack the post?? I have a side mount bracket but have never seen a pic of it installed. You can see from my profile pic there's an indent on my'69, but have no idea the orientation to install. Anyone have a pic of a side mount?

Side mount is prepared on CJ, (holes) parts are on all parts distributors. I bought one, need reinforce (wood/oak) inside.
On the tailgate, it is an other subject, but to open it will be difficult.

If you look at the passenger side of a factory CJ tailgate you can see where the holes for that mount go. The only difference between a CJ and M38 tailgate is the CJ one does not have the angle iron on the back side to support the mount. The driver side of the CJ tailgate has the cut outs where a fuel can mount would go if it was used on a M38.

and because they used a hardwood plank to make the backing to take the weight of the tire or gas, you can make your own by buying and shaping your own hardwood plank. Or like on mine, the PO welded the mount to the tailgate.

The indent over the rear wheel openings has nothing to do with the spare tire. These indents are a carry-over from the M38A-1 soft top bow mounts. The CJ side mount spare tire bracket mounts on the rear fender side behind the wheel opening. There should be a square reenforcing panel and hat channel inside the rear wheel well to help suppert the bracket.

No wood needed there are steel plates on the back of the tailgate from the factory.

I would not mount a spare on a civilian-style tailgate without serious reinforcement.

Can you directly mount a M38 tailgate on a CJ5?

Yup, they're exactly the same except for the reinforcement & the lack of the Willlys logo.

Note that on M38's the tailgates were bolted shut, they were never intended to open.

Personally I like to have the Willys logo readily visible! :)

It was a curiosity question. For now, I like the spare on the side and the Willys showing.
