I picked up the nice heater core housing shown below at right awhile back, intending to use it to replace my original, as it's in better shape overall. I just noticed for the first time today, however, that the air inlet side is reversed from that on the original housing, shown at left.

Though this housing would probably still fit my '67 okay, this raises the question of why / when they were evidently made differently on some CJ's. Anyone happen to know?

I wonder if it is from a wagon or truck with the 230 OHC.

On my 71, which is original, is on the right like the new one you just got. Maybe to give more room if in a Jeep with a V-6 so the hose is not so close to the exhaust where as a 4 banger would not be as wide and the hose would have more room and not be close to the exhaust?

Mine is the one on the right as well, but I had a 66 V 6 donor Jeep, and don't remember what the 64 had in it? Duh. That sure is a nice one Maury. I had mine powder coated, by a friend just to see how it looked, it came out pretty nice.

My '67 CJ5 (with the heater housing shown on the left above) is a V6 that was built in August of '66. I bought it from the family of the original owner, who had changed almost nothing in the engine compartment, so I think it is almost certainly original to the jeep.

It seems likely that at some point, the air inlet was moved outwards toward the fender, probably in order to allow more room around the V6.

My brother in law has a '67 V6 that was built in Nov. of '66, about 3 months after mine was manufactured. His jeep, which he bought from the family of the original owner (who did not modify or restore it) has the heater air intake on the right, further away from the engine.

It seems probable that this change occurred in sometime late 1966, fairly early in the '67 model year production run.
