I dont really have a good way of measuring it (no bore gauge) but I knew I had some play. The center of the brake pedal measures right around 1.004" (grease fitting area) while the outsides measure around 1.020". The shaft measures 0.997" as measured around where the grease would enter.

My question is whats a good way to take up the slack (besides buying new), I suppose i can bore the arm and make a brass sleeve. What does the service manual call for acceptable slop. I just ordered a good service manual, but in the meantime was wondering if anybody had one handy.

measurements with the calipers only indicate location of measurement not actual meassurment. Pictures with dial indicator are some what accurate as the pedal arm was rocked back and forth and it zeroed out each time. I also used a torch tip cleaning file which measures 0.015", it went in about 3/16".

There is only side to side play or rocking movement. very little movement if you try and pull the brake arm perpendicular to the shaft.

best solution is bore the pedal and put a brass bushing in it

Seems to me that the kit would be best used before the problem got worse. maybe a factory installed part. Considering that it was a known problem from the 50's but nothing was done to change the design up until the mid 70's.

I got the brake arm over to my neighbors house, who's a retired machinist. He, even found me a bushing that can be fit into place once the machine work is done.

That should turn out nice. Is he using a 1 1/8" OD bushing? My pedal is in similar shape. I was hoping to find a thinner bushing so I didn't have to remove so much material since I was planning a drill press and reamer to enlarge the bore.

    I am not sure.
His into older HD's and had a drawer filled with old bushings. I think he said he would have to take 0.080" from the bore of the ar and the shaft should be fine.

The ones I've done I just bore it out to the next nominal 1/16" oversize from the stock pedal diameter, make and install a bearing brass bushing. Press the bushing in with red lock tight and hone the hole to fit the shaft with about .001"-.0015" clearance. Drill the grease hole thru the bushing. I generally make and install a new brake pedal pin while I'm at it.

Got the part back from my neighbor. I asked him about a bit of loctite but he said it was going to be a press fit. It came out really nice. I also like the channels in the bushing that allows grease to flow
