    Bought a completely disassembled '68 CJ5 a year and a half ago:

Today I installed the overdrive and PTO:

Then I started the engine for the first time.

Lots of thanks to ITLKSEZ for answering a million questions and coming up with suggestions whenever I got blocked.

Today I serviced the speedometer, which didn't work.

I started by removing the speedometer cable and see if that turned, and no go. So then, I took the cable from the 3B chassis, and making sure it worked, and connecting it to the speedometer in the 5. Didn't budge. So I took the speedometer out , got it free with pliers, but thought I might take it apart to clean it, lubricate it, and check the gauges.

I also found the gels for the amp, oil, and High Beam lamps in there with remains of 50 year old tape, and taped those back in place with new tape. The gauges were blown, so I left them alone.

I put the 3B cable on the 5, now it works, except the gauges. I don't need a fuel gauge, and have an aftermarket temperature gauge kit sitting around.

Playing with the speedo a bit, I am thinking Ferris Bueller should have took an old CJ5 for a jaunt around Chicago, because with that, hanging it in reverse does reverse the odometer.

Got my new Tux bumpers today!! These are the correct original bumpers ( 3 holes only) and they are in nice shape for a 50 year old bumper.
(I'll post the rear bumper when I get it installed.)

Victory is mine! Several nights of arts and crafts pays off with I can cram an 8" booster and clutch master in with a good 1/2" to spare at the valve cover (y). Time to get with the metal versions now. The dipstick will need a little hamfisting.... IMG_20170829_181640_989-1.jpg

    1/2"???

That's exactly what I'm doing tomorrow morning. Hopefully my craftiness is adequate. I think my 5 has more room to work with tho.

Steering shaft sorted. Shock mount got some rework and I have to fab a bracket for the absurdly large support. Just a few degrees too much for a single at the column

Whew there's not a lot of room under a flatty hood! Ever thought you'd hyperventilate or throw up drilling holes? Glass body and I'm already going to be adding repairs to my skill set . No mulligans here. Need a hole saw for the booster but clutch master and booster holes done.

Moved the 6 switches from under the dash to make room for a new cig lighter combo, Volt meter/USB ports/lighter.
Since I've never had a radio mounted in the dash, I sacrificed the speaker grill for the new switch location.

What did I do to my Jeep? Well with the extra day weekend I found time to re-attach the latch plate to the tailgate of Peppy. Now I notice that the left tailgate clamp does not pop open anymore. Peppy's made 6 roughly 50 mile freeway trips in the past few days. With a broken accelerator pump, I'm averaging 17.86 MPG. Now that it's been cooler in the morning, I see the need to add a little choke. I give it just enough to raise the idle a bit, to maybe 1200 or so. 2 of the trips were out to the storage/other shop. Spent much time on my Willys pickup project. Most of the rime was spent cleaning the frame. I did pull the old seized shocks off (one was mounted upside down on the RR), took the loose LF knuckle apart to find a dead lower bearing. Found out what I figured was correct - since the frame's from a 53 with a 4, it has 5:37's in it. Ring & pinion look fantastic, but the spiders appear a bit razzled. Might be due to the shot lower bearing...

    53WillysFrame008.JPG

    Here's the diff shots...

    53WillysFrame005.JPG
    53WillysFrame006.JPG
Then I meandered over the the storage half and checked the back half of the 62's old frame. To my surprise, the tag was there. Unbolted it and cleaned in the wire wheel and found 8-39 and under that 4.88. So all that means is I'll have to see what I can match up that would be happy with the Dauntless I plan to power this truck with. Going to check the diff tags on the 69 in the back yard if they exist to verify the stock gearing the Commando had, maybe 3:73"s.

The frame is nice, but certainly not without issues. But hey, I paid 100 for it. The right side is close to great, but the left side will need the bottom of the rail, as well as re-doing the crossmember mount bracket.

    53WillysFrame022.JPG
Not to mention the cuts and hacks I need to deal with. Remember, this is from the guy the had the ad for the wooden floor "rat rod" with the drivshaft running through the cab! It'll need re-gusseted and most likely I'll ad some extra gussets.

Labor day for sure - but well spent time since it was on a Willys Jeep!(y)

Happy camper! I was able to purchase 2 Tuxedo Park chrome bumpers! The front is in better condition than the back but both are nice for a 50+ year old bumpers. A bonus was getting the original rear bumper brackets too.

Over the last few days I've spent some time on my MB. I went to install a new master cylinder and decided to at least scrape off the heaviest deposits of gunk from all the parts being reused. The tie bar had two patches of the original OD Green.[IMG] [IMG]
After I got this far with a pocket knife I noticed that one of the long bolts had the script F, from the early GPWs, on the head. Under the patches of original paint the the steel was pit free. Unfortunately the majority of the tie bar wasn't covered and has some pitting. Nothing so bad as to not re-use it. After glass bead blasting I coated them with dry zinc phosphate in prep for paint. I then noticed that the tie bar has the Ford 'F' stamped on it. My MB is not a candidate for restoration and to me this is just a master cylinder tie bar.

Is this something a GPW restorer would need? I plan on just painting and reusing it.

Last night I pulled the valves out of one of the Dauntless' heads and cleaned off the valves while the Indians played the Sox. The game ran so long, the remainder of the game was spent cleaning the exterior head rust until I had shiny cast showing. Glad the valves are tight in their guides and the margins are good. Glad the game ran late so I could finish the head!o_O

Cleaned and sealed the original and rear tanks on my '68 project CJ5. Before:

    After:

Sped up the drying with a couple of muffin fans:

I used POR-15 tank sealer which involves degreaser, metal etch, followed by the sealer itself. I poured the whole quart of sealer in the original gas tank, coated all the surfaces, then poured the sealer out of the original tank into the aux tank. Swished that tank with the sealer and poured out the excess.

Got one head back on the Dauntless which will go into the Willys pickup project. I'm gonna call the that truck "Swappy" since it will be a culmination of Jeep and Willys parts.

    69Dauntless0979.JPG

Then I finished cleaning the other head. It's looking good.

    69Dauntless0980.JPG
    69Dauntless0981.JPG

Next is clean the oil pan outside and the front cover which is almost ready except for the nooks and crannies of grease.

Ya Know those days when you wake up and you know you should stay in bed? ....... Well about a weak ago on the way home from work I heard a thump and bang noise. I stopped, the driver rear wheel bearing was smoking. I replaced that bearing with Moser parts and it's been about 20,000 miles. So over the past few days I removed the axle, then what was left of the bearing. The bearing that were still there were black and ground flat. Anyway ordered the kit again from Moser. It arrived Friday. So this morning I got started......... (should have stayed in bed).....
    WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE..........

    Axle Bearing.jpg
    :cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:
I have the capability to press the "bearing on" but the only way to remove it is to grind it off.
