You can, but people will hate you for putting that turd Model 20 in an ECJ5. :D

It's really not that bad of an axle if you get aftermarket 1pc shafts for it, and maybe truss it if you are going to run high hp or abuse it. The tubes are a little weak.

the reason I thought about this option is someone has them for 150 and I have not been able to find a dana 44 with 427 gears that anyone will part with, thats within reasonable driving distance

I don't see any advantage of the AMC 20 over the factory Dana 44. The 20 has a terrible reputation for weak tubes and weak axles. You can spend a lot of money remedying the faults of the 20. You may as well go full-floater with your existing 44.

I agree - convert the 30 to match the rear axle. All the later Jeeps have awful axle ratios anyway.

If the 30 is a 4.27 ratio, convert your rear axle. 4.27 is a desirable ratio.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the 20 a centered differential?

    It depends.

It was offset in the CJ-7 with a TH400 and Quadratrac. So they do exist. All the rest are centered.

I was wondering that too. Did 5s ever get the Quadratrack?

Offer 100. Change the spring perches on the rear and run them. A 20 is every bit as good as a tapered axle 44. Virtually the exact same axles and tubes. Make sure it is an offset from a quadratrack before buying it though.

    Centered.

Check the ratio. I would expect something like 3.31 or 2.73.

If I'm not mistaken the 1980 should still be narrow track axles.
Also ask to see if the D30 has 5 or 6 bolt hubs on it..

My AMC 20 has lasted in my 83 Scrambler sense new. ( 129000 miles) I have one piece axles for it, but have not gotten to put them in yet. The 20 rear can be either wide or narrow track, depends on the year and model. If the front hub is a five bolt, the set probably came from a scrambler. In my opinion, the 30 and 20 are a decent upgrade from what you have. I have a 66 cj5, with the same combo as you have. Both axles are still in it and functioning, so its hard to say whats better for you. I guess it would depend on how you are planning to use it.

If it is centered, there is a tiny chance that it came from a 4 cylinder with 4.10 gears. Always worth it to run down the lead and check it out. The devil is in the details.
