Hello Might think about some sort of a safety pin to lock toggle u-arms to latch bracket. If tire carrier ever got loose it could be bad. Bill in Oregon

I think I finally got rid of most of the flex in my 4" channel cross member. Please keep in mind that the flex only occurred if I opened the tire carrier to 90 degrees and stood on the latch end of it. During normal opening and closing, there is no visible flex. I mean, it is 4" channel after all.

    Before gussets.

After gussets. The furthest right gusset is welded top, then upper portion of frame bracket, lower portion of frame bracket and then the bottom of channel.

I can swing the tire carrier open and bounce the jeep with my 200lbs on the tip of it. It shouldn't be going anywhere :)

I added a pull pin to allow me to hold the carrier open in multiple positions.

Here is my improved layout. I ditched the double Michigan axe for a single bit. The single bit weighs the same, but takes up less space. It also gives me another tool because it can double as a dangerous, but functional 3 1/2lb sledge hammer. I turned the shovel point down so that it didn't block the wind or view so bad.

I added a few more creature comforts tonight. The first was a shelf that allows me to lock the lock pin in the up position. That way when I swing the carrier closed, I don't have to un lock it at each position or hold the lock pin up the whole time.
The other item added was a hard stop in the event that the lock pin was in the up position while swinging the carrier to keep the tire from hitting the body.

Getting closer to wrapping up this project.
I capped off the main upright and added two threaded 3/8" bungs to the top. Someday I may want to add a sand flag or a bracket for an antenna.

License plate bracket was added. I had to space it out 1/2" to make room for the jack base. I think that I actually like it spaced out a bit.

Assembled. I still have to finish up the wiring for the third brake light and license plate light. Matching spare tire has been ordered as well.

I have seen pigs every day for the last 2 weeks. I just have been so swamped that I don't have time to deal with them. There are 3 80-100lb sows I'm drooling over. My wife is craving pulled pork and threatening to go get one of the sows her self.

I finally finished the carrier and took it out this weekend. My buddy Steve wanted to shoot a pig for his birthday so I took him out. He missed a nice sow @150yds:worry:

So the carrier is complete and ready for paint. The LED third brake light is very bright.

Time for power steering. If you look through my build, I made many changes to the manual steering setup in attempt to improve it. After completing and driving my buddy Steve's 71 with power steering, I have had nothing but on my mind.
I first had to remove the light weight bracket installed by the PO. The Bracket utilized aluminum spacers to stand the box off the plate.:n:

The bracket was harder than I thought to get off, but I'm glad I did.

Needless to say, there will be some improvements made to this......

Here is my steering box bracket that I will weld on. 3/8" thick steel with steel spacers welded on.

Here is a little mock up of where I am planning on having the box end up. Just like on Steve's 71 build, the power steering hoses will be behind the grill. Looks like I will need to make a small notch for one port on the box.

Power steering is complete. I have not driven it yet, but turning the wheels in the shop is very satisfying.

The oval hole in the middle of the steering box bracket allowed me to get more weld onto the frame horn.

Here is an overall view of the system.
