I'm looking to replace my old Sears air compressor. It will need to be big enough to run air tools. I would also like it to be silent as possible. Thanks

Quincy is my next one. There are other brands that are good. I have a 60 gallon Harbor fight one that they dont make anymore. Its VERY loud. Was like 600 bucks on sale almost 10 years ago. Still works fine.

I have a big husky (CF I believe). It works awesome. I had it in my shop. It runs on 220 so it is in storage right now. I have a smaller Husky I use on my install trailer that is what I have here at the house. Both are very loud but the bigger one is much quieter.

I have the pump type. Makes about 15-16cfm IIRC Bought the service kit with it so I had the proper oil and filters. The part that I like best is Made in USA

Regarding the noise, i understand that much of the noise comes out of the air intake of the compressor. This topic (and which compressor) has been discussed a lot on the Garage Journal site: site:garagejournal.com quieting air compressor - Bing - You can mitigate the noise some.

I was looking for a compressor for a couple of months before I ought mine. The usual advice is "buy the largest compressor you can afford" ... or figure out how much you want to spend and buy the compressor that fits your budget. I was going to buy a 60 gal 2-stage Champion or Quincy, but I considered the Husky and Harbor Freight and Tractor Supply generic equivalents. Lowes carried the Coleman Powermate compressors under the Kobalt brand ... and apparently Coleman discontinued their compressor line and sold the brand. I bought my single-stage 60 gal Kobalt compressor on close-out for under $300, when generic equivalents sell for about twice that. So I bought less compressor than I had planned, but it has been fine for me.

This is roughly equivalent to what I have - 60 gal. 5 HP 165 PSI Two Stage Air Compressor There are a lot of compressors on the market with similar size and features to this one. This type of compressor is a lot quieter than the smaller oilless compressors, but they are still noisy. The name brands like Champion and Quincy will be quieter still, but they are twice the price. Being two-stage, they make more air as well.

Realize that you will easily spend another $200-300 on a regulator, filter-dryer, and plumbing for these stationary compressors. TP Tools has a discussion of piping - Modular Metal Piping Kits

Something that has not been talked about yet is CFM. Currently there is no "Truth In Advertising" for compressors. The internet research I've done says most companies over estimate the capabilities of their systems. And I'm betting (no facts to back this up)that the tool producers under estimate the requirements of their tools. The bottom line is, if you have a compressor rated at 4cfm@90psi and a tool that is rated the same, you will spend a lot of time wailing for the compressor to catch up.

i spend a lot of time waiting and i have an industrial albeit antique ingersoll rand type 30 two stage.btw the compressor head is basically unchanged for many moons. mine is a 1947 ,and except for a different filter and slightly different plumbing for oil and air lines looks the same as the 2014 at work.

I have a 30g horiz quincy that makes around 9. Small and quiet. Hard to run an air orbital sander, but enough to spray and do a little sand blasting. Great machine.

All about CFM..............Look at the Air tools you want to run continuously........air sanders , grinders and sand blasters take lots of air......take the CFM rating of the tool you will run the most and match it with a compressor.
If Noise is and issue a little insulated outdoor shed attached to your outside wall sized specifically for the compressor works wonders. Mount it on concrete base on rubber.......

Really wanted to do that... too damn cold here for that to work well and the snow kept getting in the way.

Common Chuck, I know you could build one........3'x3' with a shed roof , solid insulation on the walls and door......gets it and the noise out of the shop............

I could - built the shop and the shed I use... Problem with the compressor outside it is the porting through the walls, and keeping it from freezing even insulated. I had one like that in the past and the tank got cold enough to freeze and crack the bottom of the 60 Gal tank. I'm mulling over an 'expansion' to the shop and how to make all that work.

The wife is spending some time in there helping with her Mustang and realizes 'You have too much stuff in here to work efficiently' - couldn't have planned that better if I tried :)

It was 23º this morning when we went out to work on the steering - fired up the heater (portable propane - don't ask about our Regional Building Codes to put heat in a shop) and things were a bit 'tight' out there...

Put a light in the compressor shed. With the switch in the garage. That's how we keep the well from freezing.
