My current seats are the typical low back buckets that are fairly thick. Im looking to replace them with a thinner style like a suspension seat or other race style but still want them somewhat comfortable so no aluminum bomber seats....

What do you guys run and recommend?

You could look at M38A1 units. Basic pads.

    Drop-in replacement on Earlys.

That was a big issue for me with the underseat tank. The aftermarket seats were just too thick

I've got the stock early style seats & there's plenty of room between my rather over-sized belly & the wheel.

Thats another issue is being so high i have to crouch a bit to see out the side windows with a soft top on. Guess they really werent made for a 6'1", 250# guy but i still love it

I have been thinking about goung to a 71 rear tank and dropping the seats down a bit. My biggest issue now is having to splay my knees out when turning as my steering wheel sits on my knees when i have my feet on the brake and clutch.

I keep looking at the options in the Northern Tool catalog. They have quite the selection of slim, comfy looking seats. They're outdoor rated, fold down, plus some have really low profile slide mechanisms.

I put Rugged Ridge seats in mine to make it drivable. The original seats are awaiting recovering. The RR seats are thick, but I reversed the spacers and the seat frame fits directly to the body (ok, did have to fab an adapter from 1/4 steel plate). That dropped the seat about an inch and a half. I was also able to move it back an inch in the process.

At the Jeep dealer we put van seats in beach Jeep trade-ins, so they would have good seats to go to the car auction. The bottom cushion was so thick it nearly touched the steering wheel.

The factory seats give you quite a bit of room, and fit most drivers. Plus the bucket seats are comfortable. I suspect aftermarket seats may have the same problem as the van seats. The trick would be finding original seats in good condition, or spending quite a lot to have a ratty set reupholstered.

I recall that seas from a Mustang were popular back in the '70s. You're not going to find those for cheap now, but you may find some good OEM seats with a short bottom cushion and thin back at the pick-and-pull.

That opening will definitely keep water from standing in the seat and i do like the slight side bolsters...
