I've had my stock 1971 V-6 CJ5 since 2009. I tried to have the 3 finger clutch replaced with a diaphragm clutch years ago, but the transmission shop couldn't get the diaphragm clutch to work. They wound up rebuilding the 3 finger clutch and re installing it. I just chalked it up to a bad transmission shop.

Recently my T-14 transmission began popping out of 2nd and 3rd gears, so I took the jeep to a 4x4 shop to have it rebuilt. I figured that since they were going to pull the tranny I take another stab at getting the 3 finger clutch replaced with a diaphragm clutch. Well, they had problems too. They got the clutchinstalled, but it doesn't push far enough to disengage. They are trying to figure it out now.

I know next to nothing about clutches and transmissions. I've never worked on either. I'm baffled by this, and decided to do a bit of research on the Novak web site. On the T-14 page it states that the 1971 jeep used a unique bellhousing that was "deeper". Does that mean a longer throwout gearing would be required? When I look up the clutch set online, it shows the same set for 1968 to 1971. Could the problem be that they just don't list a separate set for the unique 1971, or that it just requires a differed throwout bearing? The LUK clutch set I found for 68-71 is LUK 01029. Does anyone have a part number a clutch set or throwout bearing that is unique to the 71???

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

on novaks tech page they mention that the throw out bearing that comes with the kit may not work. they also have section on how to measure to find out what bearing is needed.

Thanks. I'll pass that on to the shop.

Has anyone experienced this problem with their 71, and can verify what the issue is, and provide any part numbers??

I had that problem on 69 cj5. I used the long throw out bearing. It was a N1086. At the time adjustable throw out fork ball studs weren't around. You may look into those, they are less expensive that a 1086 and many use them now. It looks to be a better way to go.

My jeep is completely stock with the original clutch cable, not a hydraulic conversion. Though I am no mechanic, it would seem to me that there should be a stock part that will fix my problem. Isn't all that info on the Novak site regarding various conversions, which really shouldn't apply to my situation??

FWIW they list a TO bearing for 66 to 71, but it can't hurt to call and find out if there is also a specific one for '71?

I found the below info on this bulletin board:

Buick V-6 clutch lever and throw out bearing (CJ3B Bulletin Board)

Most Dauntless CJ's were equipped with a diaphram type pressure plate W/O # 948692.
These use release bearing GM # 907588.
This release bearing is integral with the carrier (not seperable).
The release bearing face is rounded.
This GM integral bearing carrier has a 1/2" wide groove.
The clutch release lever assembly has a formed spring rivotted into position made of flat spring stock.
This lever spring must be compressed since the fork and spring both ride inside the 1/2" carrier groove.
This same special shaped spring also clips behind the ball pivot stud.
The associated release lever pivot stud is GM # 3729000 @ 1-1/2" OAL.

A Borg Beck 3 finger type pressure plate W/O # 994843 was also available.
These use release bearing W/O #994857.
The release bearing face is flat.
Here again... this same as previous GM stamped steel release lever with spring is used.
The associated release lever pivot stud is W/O #994463 @ 2-5/16" OAL

Notice the difference in the length of the release lever pivot studs. The 3 finger clutch is 2-5/16", and the diaphragm clutch is 1-1/2". Since Im going from the 3 finger to the diaphragm I should currently have the longer one instead of the shorter one for the diaphragm clutch, that could be the problem.

On my 69 CJ-5, I just put in a new clutch, it had a 3 finger and I when with a diaphragm, use all new parts, they looked the same as the old throw out, worked fine? Maybe the difference is uses the old bell crank instead of a cable?

I use a raised diaphragm 10 1/2 " from a ford mustang with the stock T14 throw out bearing ( diaphragm type)
    More Information for M-PACT 07042
look at center of diaphragm for raised area
not saying to buy this . clutch disc will not fit T14 input shaft

So, I assume that there are raised and not raised (flat) diaphragms? I'll check with the shop to see which one they have.

Thanks to all who provided their assistance.

However, they couldn't get a diaphragm clutch to work, so again I've got a rebuilt three finger clutch. They said they worked with the clutch, throw out bearing and pivot ball, and could get nothing to work. I find that hard to believe. I don't think anyone runs three finger clutches anymore, so there has to be drop in parts somewhere.

It's a fully stock 1971, V6, T14, cable pull clutch set up. If anyone has completed a successful change to a diaphragm clutch for this specific year, and has part numbers for a drop in clutch, pilot bearing, throw out bearing, and pivot ball, please let me know. Maybe next time I'll take another stab at getting a diaphragm clutch.

BTW, does anyone know where I could buy a NEW three finger clutch? I've been told by two different shops that they can find one.

i have been having trouble with my clutch to and also used LUK 01029 kit you are using. that is what rockauto showed as being the correct kit but it isnt. after doing some research i ordered the LUK 04021 kit that twin2 linked. i think it has to do with the 01029 kit having flat diaphragm fingers that throws off the spacing with all the components and not letting the parts work together properly. when i talked to novak tech support they recommended a raised diaphragm clutch to correct the the spacing issue.
