Late CJ5; got it bought!

    A very good bargain. Bonne affaire. Just repair the fenders, will be easy and better that new ones, IMO of course.
    With a soft top in the good matching color, will be a jewel.

    Mmm. I kinda like the bashed fenders. I'm liking it the way it is. Character. If it were mine, I'd fix the seats, stabilize any rust, and drive it.

    Nice Jeep, looks to be in great condition. I love how your shifter boot is still intact after 37 years, and my worthless reproduction didn't last two weeks.:lol:

    Thanks for all the comments. My dad is like "when you gonna sell it?" This is Jeep number 62 that I have owned, and as I told him, there are a lot of vehicles I have owned over the years that I wish I had back. Its time to hang on to a few good ones. I built my CJ-6 just for me, and I will likely give it to my son when I'm done with it since he also has a lot of sweat in it. This one, well it's just because it is unique and I like the fact that it is still "new" in a lot of ways. I suspect drivetrain-wise it has a lot left to offer. I'll get the appearance right, and yes, it will stay stock. My daughter may get it.

    I would like to run black bear pass with it. Mostly just because it would do it easily and it would be so much fun to do it in a stock vehicle. Don't see that much out there any more. Yeah, I know, you do see stock Wranglers and FJ Cruisers, but I like the old school stuff so much more.

    The older I get, the more I appreciate antiques. Wish I had known that was going to happen when I was a kid.

    I too get the "When are you going to sell it?" from co-workers. I've had about 36 cars but I can't imaging 62, especially all Jeeps. Wow...Just Wow!

    I started taking pictures of all my jeeps starting with my first, a 1981 CJ7 I had in 1984. Pics were all 35mm until I bought my first digital camera in 1996. Those who have been to my shop have seen the many prints on the wall. I rolled that 81 at fairly high speed, and then was in another high speed rollover in a 3B I had sold a friend of mine. That was 17 years ago, and I said no more jeeps. Had around 30 since then. I've gone through 6 since I started building my CJ-6! Most I buy and fix a few things on and flip them. There are so many out there that have been butched with incorrect spring over jobs, bad steering geometry, lack of upkeep, etc that I find it easy to clean them up, correct a few things, and send them down the road. I didn't keep track of the power wagons, M-37's, Scouts, and other toys! I built a M35A2 into a bobber before I started the cj6. I dont do it for a living; I do it to keep my sanity, and cause I love working on old iron.

    I complain to myself regularly that there are no more flatfenders within 100 miles of me cause I bought and sold all of them already! Barn finds are the most fun, but driving by and seeing a jeep in neglect is always a beckoning to me to go try to buy it. More often than not, it can be bought.

    Been piddlin with the 79. I have the new fenders on it, new turn signal / marker lights in front and new tail lights in back. Wheels have all been repainted. Top has been painted outside-inside didn't need it. All lights work as intended. I'm going to have the dents in the body professionally removed and have it resprayed the original 9K Sable Brown Metallic as soon as funds allow.

    My powerwasher is powerful enough that it really strips the crud off. I painted the whole frame and axles with rustoleum. Still need to straighten that front bumper. Ill chain my 66 to a tree from the back and chain the 79 to my truck, then I can use the 12,000 lb winch to gently pull that bumper back where it belongs.

    I'll have more pics soon of how it looks now. Weather has been cold and unpredictable again-enough to run me inside.

    What would be the recommended non-electric standard old fashioned manual choke replacement carburetor for this 79 with the 258 engine? The carb on it runs, but I'd like to get rid of the electronics / electrics and just have a good ole hand choke carb.

    In the past, I've tried both Carter and Motorcraft carburetors. The end result is the same, I always revert back to Weber. Most my experience has been with the 32/36 which is a bit small for the 258. I purchased a Weber 38 DGES that came with an electric choke. I couldn't be happier with the performance, it literally took me less than five minutes to dial in. Great idle, good throttle response and easy to install. I usually prefer manual chokes but I already had the Jeep wired for an electric choke. Works great every time, in fact this old Jeep starts quicker than my 2001 Cherokee with fuel injection. :lol:

    I still run all the factory ignition and emissions components. A few more hoses than I care for but runs great and doesn't stink up my garage with gas fumes.
