I have a '71 with the 225ci that was originally white then blue turquoise then cammo, and I'm getting ready to paint it this spring. I have seen many pictures of early CJ5s with black windshield frames and some that are the same color of the body. I would like for my CJ to look era correct. What color would mine have come with? What years had the windshield black or colored?

You will be plenty correct by painting the frame black.

It was in the mid 70's sometime when they started painting windshield frames in the body color...maybe Timgr can chime in on the correct date.
But black would be correct for yours

Does the 74 windshield still have the removal slots in the hinges?

Yes, I believe so. Pretty sure hinge design does not change until 1976.

Correct me if I am wrong, but all of the 'shields with the removal slot in the hinges would be painted black. They would have no way of knowing what body color the 'shield was being mounted on. For the CJ's. The MD and M38(A1) 'shields would probably be military green.

"1974 IIRC. My 1975 is body color". From Timgr's post above. And '75 was the last year for the slotted windshield hinges. That went away with the body re-design in '76.
How would they know the color of the fenders, hood, grill, etc. as those were painted off the vehicle...

Shrugs... Don't know. Jeeps were about the only vehicles with a removable 'shield. Are the fenders, hoods, and grills painted on or off the vehicle for other makes?

Every vehicle ive seen the parts have been painted then put together. Otherwise you would have serious issues with unprotected bare metal surfaces

But you at least have ecoating or primer under them.

With older vehicles that wasnt the case

    Do you?

Down those seams between the fender and body they are not painted. That is your electrical ground connection between fenders and the rest of the body.

I have pulled fenders off with seam sealer between them and brand new looking paint under it. The bolts do the grounding as well as ground straps when needed...

    Back to the origial post...
I have never seen an early cj without a black windshield.

    but this is an Intermediate.

There was some 50s advertising copy posted here that showed a body-color windshield on an Early. May have only been for the mules, and production all got black frames?
