The PO had some sort of rubber hose and it's a stiff and cracked into pieces. What was originally used to cover the tail gate chains? Canvas? Colored or white?

The originals were sewn with kind of fabric backed vinyl - like seat material - in my experience. Gray, I think, or possibly black. Reproductions are available.

A length of bicycle inner tube will work. I cut a drain hole at the bottom of the bend.

If you look at PeteL's photo you can see this is the same as the cover that goes on some top bows. That's what I used on my CJ5A.

I came home from work one day and my wife had made me a couple of chain covers from an old canvas bag. I used SS hardware to make the chains.

Tuxedo Park models had chain covers to match the convertable top, spare cover, and seat upholstery. This means they could be black, white, red, green or blue.

I used some black heat shrink tubing (no heat).
Tended to catch water so I put drain holes at the bottom of the U.

I think I'm gonna find some canvas and have the misses run a few seams.

In my garage! Don't know where it came from but was in one of my junk boxes. Pretty sure the electrical supply house would have it.

I used canvas that matches the seat covers. New life canvas made all my stuff from canvas that I supplied, and did a good job.
