F134 PCV vs F134 draft tube

    I have been wondering why changes were made on F134 to go from draft tubes to PCV valves. I have seen some with them and some with out draft tubes. I also noticed some with breathers on the valve cover and some with hoses going to the air box and some with no breather at all on the valve cover but with draft tubes. It made me think if it has a draft tube wouldn't it need alittle more than the crank case vent where the oil filler tube is if it has a draft tube?

    Even the L134 flathead has PCV in the design - from the valve cover to the intake manifold - this is what you're talking about. Better for water crossings was the reason, I think.

    A PCV valve does a better job of scavenging oil blowby from the crankcase and reduces the amount of sludge that builds up in the engine.

    Road draft tubes probably went away due to emissions.

    Willys invented the closed system for WWII complete water submersion.
    SW and PU models with Hurricane used road draft tubes while CJ models all used PCV systems.
    That was prior to understanding the benefits of the closed crank ventilation system.
    The closed system also provides for a cleaner engine.
    The closed crankcase did not become an industry standard until the late 1950's.
    GM did the late 50's research that made road draft tubes obsolete.

    Ok well I found a valve cover with the vent on top. If I'm right doesn't the pcv for the valve covers with vents on top go on the side of the intake manifold with a rubber hose going to it. Because I would like to change the stock set up because I cannot get bell fitting on the side of the crank case to seal properly.

    Some of the CJ flatties had road tubes.

    To make a complete curcuit there would be a PCV valve in the cover with a line going to the port under the carb , and another tube running from the dipstick tube to the oilbath aircleaner.

    I have two f134's both I thought were from around 64. One has the big hole in the side cover on the back, where the throttle linkage goes up to the carb, and the PCV is on the intake below the carb, the other has the big hole on the side cover on the front with the PCV valve and is hard piped to the intake and teed off the heater control. I have often wondered what the difference was. Does anyone know what the difference is?

    On my stock 66, (F134) the PVC valve is located on the intake below the carb, my valve cover has the big bell on top and my Side valve cover has a big washer below the front nut. I have the exact same set-up that Willys1953 is showing in his picture.

    I believe the PVC valve set-up was changed at one point or another an the factory moved the PVC below the carb and added the bell in the valve cover but I may be completely wrong about that.

    Valve cover from either a pickup or a wagon. Do not believe the CJ's ever came with that bell on top of the valve cover. I am probably wrong about that, though.

    Pierre -- I also have a 1966 cj5 F134, and I need some clarity on what you describe as a PCV valve and its locations. I've read on this forum what's available for PCV and examined my factory service manual. But I'm still not sure if I have a PCV valve and where it is. (1) I have under the carb a brass fitting that goes into the engine block; one endof this brass fitting has the small diameter vacuum hose for the heater; the other end has a larger hose that I think goes to one of two fittings on the double-action fuel pump. (2) I have the 'bell' on the valve cover with hose going to air cleaner (I think; I'd have to look under the hood to be certain where it goes -- but this is not a concern. (3) my concern is whether there is a PCV valve to be removed and cleaned/replaced. Is something inside that brass fitting under the carb, or in the hose leading from it to the fuel pump? (4) what do you mean by your description "....and my Side valve cover has a big washer below the front nut"? Are you saying that one side of the valve cover has big washer that has some relevance to PCV? I don't know that I've seen such piece, but I will look for this tonite.

    To summarize all this: I am clueless as to how to locate (and then remove) what is called a PCV valve for a 1966 F134. Any help? -- ronnie

    Hi,

    I attached two photos... I hope they are clear enough. This is the set-up I have on my Jeep - I believe it is stock but someone may correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just a newbie on this forum. I apologized, I don't have a big washer underneath the front exhaust valve cover nut, I just have a small copper washer.

    I also forgot to mention that if your current set-up doesn't look like mine then the PVC should be attached to the fitting that is mounted to the front valve cover bolt. The PVC valve should look the same as mine in the photo just mounted at a different location.

    Excellent !!!!, Pierre. That's a great photo of the carb area with identifying captions for each part. I see what I believe is the same set up as on my '66 (except that I have the original Carter YF carb, not Solex). What I didn't know was that the PCV valve is on the end of that brass fitting into the engine block. And I see that by having gone by memory when I wrote my first reply, I was wrong about the hose routing. I now see that the hose on the right side of the brass fitting routes to the breather bell on valve cover. I'm sure it's the same on my F134.

    I'll check this tonite, feeling confident now that I, too, will find a PCV valve (to clean) under the carb. -- thank you, ronnie

    That PVC is from the 1950's. To clean it,just remove the hose and take valve and drop in some cleaner and let it soak . it can be taken apart by using a wrench . But soaking it until rattles when shaken. inside all it is a spring and brass cone.

    My f134 in 67 cj5 has a cone shaped screen filter that installs inside the side valve cover. The front bolt that secures the cover to the engine goes through the middle of it.
    A what is the purpose of the cone shaped screen filter ?
    B. Is the bolt the only thing secures it?

    Is there anything different about the pvc valve that threads into the fitting in the side of intake manifold compared to the one that threads into the bell on the side of the lifter cover?
