No Heater in Jeep, But Some Remnants Remain...

What is this?




I have no heater in the CJ-5, but this piece attaches to the hose that goes to the windshield defrosters. I have no idea what the heater should even look like in a CJ-5, so if anyone has an idea what I need to order and from where, I would appreciate it. The hoses that would normally connect to the heater coil are bypassed right now under the hood. Nothing to connect them to. Thanks in advance...

 

That looks like an addition by PO, where they added a screw off cap for something. Maybe you just unscrewed it, as a blow lukewarm air at the passengers vent? I don't think that's original.....

 

That looks like a drain plug. But that could just be me.

Are there two holes up above the pedals in the fire wall that look big enough to run water hoses through? That thing looks like some used it to defrost the windshield and then have warm air to keep it clear and a little warm air for his knees. The heater would have mounted just to the left of that gizmo.

There are no holes in the firewall, but under the hood, there are two hoses that are connected by a 1/4 turn valve. The valve is off and probably should be, as I am sure a heater coil would normally be just beyond the valve and the line on the other side of the valve would be the return, and the valve would allow one to turn off this parallel path of hot coolant to keep warm air out of the passenger compartment in the summertime. I have blown forced air up through the single hose that leaves this box and it goes to a splitter where two smaller hoses are connected and the other end goes to the defrost vents for the windshield. There are also no holes for the old three knob heater system that I remember Jeep used to have. I am thinking that since this was a California Jeep, if a heater was an option in '62, this one was ordered without one. I will have to check into after market heaters/vents/defrosters for the Jeep. Come to think of it, when I was rewiring the circuitry in the Jeep, there was no fuse connected to the AC/Heater block and there were no wires leaving the block either. Interesting...

Not in my FSM. Mine is called "Service Manual for jeep universal vehicles" What section? So there is not a second defroster flex duct? What is the second outlet on top of 22?

 

I can attest the Summit Heater works very well in an early CJ.

 

What about installation?

 

I'd suggest a search as this has been covered a LOT here complete with various mounting locations and lots of details on how different people made them work. I mounted the one in the Daughter's '70 on the passenger side behind the glove box. I used a choke cable to operate a water valve to control coolant flow for temperature.
Tarry99 made a very nice diffusion box in a thread to divert hot air to the defroster and to the cabin as needed. Lots of info and good ideas.

 

I'd like to know also. I suspect the heater unit is common to other vehicles so the extra outlet supports multiple applications. One thought is a dash vent when also defrosting; not so useful in an ECJ5.

ISTR reading most folks just cap it off with a spray paint cap. Same note said they fit perfect.

Fyi the earliest cj5 jeeps had a heater identical to this picture. Except early didn't have the vacuum controls. They were strictly cable driven similar to a choke cable

 

Does anyone have pics of the cable system? My 62 has the earlier cable system.

 

I've been trying to find out about this cable system as I had all of the knobs but not the heater. Anyone know of a thread on this?

 

The left knob goes to the coolant shutoff valve the middle one goes to the flap inside the box by the core. And the right knob labeled defrost goes to the flapper that diverts to the defrost, it's inside the part that the air exits near your feet near tranny center hump
