It's her Jeep and she wants to help paint it. Here she is putting the finishing touch on coat #2 this morning. One more coat and the inside of the tub will be done.

So far it's going nicely. You can see the area under the upper rail of the tub is tough to get to with the brush. I may end up spraying it with some gloss white.

When I get some time I'll post some things I've learned as we've gone along with this.

    Teaser? Funny!

We put the first coat on the outside of the tub last night. Here's what it looks like. Splotchy coverage, but I think it's better to put on a thin coat rather than too thick. Second coat will look much better. Also, the inside panel behind the passenger door is first coat.

Inside of tub looked so good after two coats that I didn't even do a third. I may go back and do a third if I've got paint left when it's done.

I'll let this sit a couple days, scuff it with 320 and apply the second coat. Then sit a couple days, scuff, and do third coat.

So far I've only used about 1/3 of a gallon.

Boy was I way off... Lol. I've seen the thread, I've always wanted a MGB.

The paint is looking good, I'm glad you went for it despite the feedback.

Thanks, it's been a learning experience for sure. Roll and tip may not be the perfect way to paint a vehicle, but it's a good alternative. I'm sure I'll use it again.

It is a 1972 Pontiac green. I don't recall the name, we had a 72 LeMans Enduro that was that color.

To the OP that is looking good!

Second coat on this afternoon. Much better coverage than first coat, but will need at least one more.

Today's "ah ha": I decided to spend the extra $ for a top quality bristle brush to use around nooks and crannies. Big difference. Better coverage and fewer bubbles to tip off.

Well guys, as usual I've been distracted by other stuff, but I have made some progress on this. Here are some thoughts I have on this process and a couple of pictures from this morning.

As I've said from the beginning this was an experiment. I'd heard about this process for years and wanted to give it a try.

Is it a perfect paint job? Heck no. But it's a good 20 footer.

    Pros

    1. Inexpensive way to change the color on your Jeep. I will have about $200 into the entire job by the time I'm done.
    2. No need for a compressor or spray booth. No worry about overspray or complaints from family or neighbors about paint fumes.
    3. Amazing how well the bubbles disappear when you "tip" the paint with the brush.
    4. Paint flows out nicely as it dries and has good gloss, at least for now.

    Cons

    1. This takes a lot of time to do because it requires at least 2 coats to cover well. So, lots of sanding.
    2. I spent about 75% of the time it took to do the tub on the inside. Lots of nooks and crannies in there that are hard to sand and cover with a roller and brush. Lots of runs and drips to catch.
    3. Probably will scratch easier than other paint finishes. But, touch up is simple. I'm going to put mats on the floor to protect the paint. I'm not a fan of bed liner, but that could be an option for the inside of the tub.

Would I do it again? Sure. It was actually kind of fun rolling the paint on and tipping off the bubbles. Made me feel like an artist!:)

I'll finish the front fenders soon and have it all together and running by spring. I've already got most of the Tux Park chrome done. I'm looking forward to seeing that on.

We had the upholstery done at a local shop last month. I was going to do a roll bar and bikini top, but decided I wanted the Tux Park fender pads instead so we're going topless. Remember this is a grand kid hauler, Friday night trip to the ice cream parlor Jeep and, since the colors are local high school colors, it'll probably be in a parade or two.

Looking very good. Good to see a MK III coming back to life. Don't think there are very many of them out there running.
