My Little "Barn" Find... '55 CJ5

    Did some more cruising in the Jeep today and discovered some new issues. I went on a 24 mile cruise up to about 9000ft and when I got home it would barely start with the accelerator floored. At first I figured it might be a vapor lock, but then I noticed a bunch of fuel leaking around the carb. If I had to guess, I was overheating the fuel and the increased pressure was bypassing the carb needle and causing it to flood. (just a guess) Once it cooled off, the leaking stopped.

    Did bring up some issues though once I looked into it.

    First off, what fuel pump is this? I noticed moisture around the edges and I think it's probably leaking a little. I want to rebuild it, but can't find any reference to what it is.

    Secondly, I wonder if this is why my fuel got too hot, haha... obviously I need to re-route this fuel line tomorrow.

    Lastly, look at where the hose runs from the air cleaner to the filler tube... is that the correct routing? Should my valve cover have a vent hole?

    Fuel pump- looks like a "single stage" (no vacuum pump) used on later models

    Fuel line- that's approximating the factory routing but it should be under the water pump running along side the pvc vacuum line (which you seem to be missing) & not rubbing the block- the factory used a hose clamp attache to a timing cover bolt to provide an air gap.

    Air cleaner hose-, some earlier engines had valve cap/breathers, later ones didn't. Your's is right for those that don't.

    Fishing- most fish prefer a Bud. :rofl:

    Is that fuel pressure regulator on the suction line of the pump???

    Pressure regulator is between the fuel pump and the carb.

    So we have a new issue... I rerouted the fuel lines an sealed everything up. Now the jeep will idle great and run for about 5 minutes before fuel starts leaking from the flat rod that goes into the float bowl. I adjusted the floats twice and this didn't fix it. Looking down the carb after the engine is shut off, I can see a decent puddle of fuel sitting on top of the butterfly and it seems to still be flowing, causing some leaks around the throttle shaft. When I open the carb, there is plenty of fuel in the bowls.

    Am I right in thinking that it's either an issue with the needle not seating correctly, the float valve is not seating correctly, or both?

    edit: I just remembered that some rebuild kits had a float valve with an opening that was too big. Time to compare the various ones I have on hand.

    Also avoid the rubber tipped needle valve they may swell from the 10% alcohol where applicable.

    Read up on what people like Timgr have written, Not all carb kits are the same and some of the parts don't work well in a Jeep. Flooding is common if the wrong needle and seat is used. You might check with Scoutpilot. I think he does carb work for a living.

    Good eye, that's Lemon. I wasn't actually hoping to catch anything, just needed a big open place to practice casting and drink beer.

    So the flooding mystery was solved... a tiny piece of rubber worked its way into the base of the float valve, keeping it from closing all the way. Jeep is currently running the best it has since I got it. Today is the first day that I've had it tuned so that I can start it without touching the gas pedal. Woohoo!

    Traded for some more goodies... don't know anything about these hubs, but they are cool.

    Those shoes look a lot like what my 3B is running around now except mine are studded. Came off of my brothers CJ6. Never got enough snow here last winter to see how they do.

    I have those same hubs on my CJ-6. I swapped them on in place of the drive flanges that were still on it. They seem to hold up well.

    Not too much to update... just won this bad boy on ebay... Nothing like having a period correct 5 channel CB the size of a shoe box in your jeep... haha
