My rear bumper was slightly bent in a few spots, so I decided to remove it (with the rivets and weld cutting it took a few days). I finally got it off and now I'm trying to figure out next steps.

If anyone fab their own rear bumper, I'd like to see pictures of what you did and why. . . my initial thought was to have one that reinforces the rear end that also sticks out past the body line for protection.

Here is a picture of mine. It's a piece of 2 X 4 square tube, welded to the frame. The lights were cut in with a plasma cutter. Are you looking for something more stock or custom? You're not that far away, I think I've got some 3 X 5 laying around. There's plenty of material in Vallejo - Alco has new and surplus.

Somewhere I have pictures that I can't find right now. 4 " channel to replace the rear crossmember on my 3B and with a 3" spacers to make a bumper with a reciever hitch set up out of more 4" channel. 8" straps bolted into the frame and also bolted into the old A shaped section of the old crossmember.

Here is what I came up with.
A piece of 4" channel with a wedge cut out of each end for the taper.
2-2.75" x 14" x 3/4" with a 1" hole punched in it for mounting to the frame and D-ring mount.
    1 shorty receiver hitch.
2 safety chain loops made from some old radiator support rods.

Also I incorporated the rear body mounts into it since the stock cross member was removed.
Yes, it has a flat front tire.

i used a chunk of thick (like 3/8) 3.5 inch angle left the flange sticking out and drilled shackle holes in the edge lined up with the frame.[IMG]

Here's a shot of the stubby I built for the B.

After bending the ears back on the stock version, I could see no purpose in extending this any farther than necessary. It is actually mounted somewhat similar to pfmg's. There are 1/2" plate gussets on top of the frame that extend forward about 6" to which the roll bar is mounted (mounting brackets just visible under the tub) and a 1/4" plate welded to that that extends along the outside of the frame. All that is bolted through to billit steel inserts I milled to fit inside the frame rails and to which the shackle hangers are also bolted. The main incentive for that project was to get the cross member out-boarded so I could build a larger fuel tank (which came out at 24.7 gallons). The extra bolts in the top are for mounting a canoe rack. The material is 2x3x1/4" tube.

And if you are wondering about the "elkhorn" tire carrier, the soft top doors fit on there.

I started with 3/16" 2" x 4" tube. Added my old tire carrier. I welded my bumper directly to the frame as I was looking to stiffen up the frame in any way I was able.

I welded nuts inside the tube for the hinge mount and the latch before I capped the ends.

My home job rear bumper is a 6x6 3/16 steel angle welded to the ends of the frame with spacers out 1 inch from the body and welded to the 4 bolt hole tie in for the trailer hitch It is 1 inch wider than the Jeep body now that it is on I scribed out lines 13 inches from each end leaving 2 inches of the REAR FACING back and cut them with a saws all and finished with a polishing wheel on a grinded. The appearance is alot like rattyflay's in the photo above
