    Hello,

Last summer during holidays in Croatia I bumped into an information that somebody is selling a Jeep. One like I have (have an 78 CJ5).
After investigating I discovered it is an CJ6 and even better, the original owner is selling it,
This jeep has an amazing history. Bought in 72 in Canada. As a rare civil 304 CJ6. Brought to London, cruised the Côte d'Azur and finally brought to Croatia where the owner came from originally.
The Jeep then was the family fun vehicle at the coast, then one of his kids broke the engine.
The engine went to a shop some 30 years ago, and got lost.so it sat in his shed.
He did not want to sell, but his kids lost interest, and I convinced him to sell it to me.
So I guess it's a quite a rare find her in Europe.

He started to restore it in 2012, a company did it, frame is done, axles also, then they stopped since the company closed business, body is in quite good condition, it has some rust on the passenger side. Needs some patches. New fenders, tailgate and windows frame.
The Jeep is disassembled, well, somehow, tranny is in bed, etc. have an old top for it, quite torn.
I have the first license plates, the first registration documents, etc. unfortunately no order doc or manual.

I plan to keep the car and built it up quite close to original.
I'll have tons of questions, since I have been more into the post 75 Jeeps and missing some detail knowledge.

I'll post some pics asap. But some questions upfront:
Where can I buy a new replacement tailgate with that "old Jeep logo"?
Same question for the windshield and a new soft top.
That's it for now, thank you.
    Gordon

Great, hope you have good memories on HD. ;)
I recently sold another 6, but in a much more worse shape than the 72 is.
Old army model similar to jeepwuze's from Austria. But with no traceable history. I like it if a car has a story to tell, like my other (vintage) cars.
I have been always in the CJ5, but liked the 6 because it would make due to space more of a family Jeep than the 5.
Quite happy. But lot of work I have to squeeze in between.

So, after I have some trouble with Tapatalk where I could have included the pics directly, I needed to develop a plan B to put some pictures online.
Here's the link, since I did not been able to embed the pics individually, please visit the album on flickr.

This is how it has been stored.

And where could I get a tailgate with that Style of Jeep logo from?

    Gordon,

Nice Project..........your just going to have to reach out to all the 4-wheel drive suppliers here in the USA.........the Jeep Logo tailgate is out there as well as either Windshield glass or a frame...........although I will caution you on the aftermarket frames as they do not have a good reputation for fitting correctly as compared to the old OEM versions. Soft tops are available..................Just Google away! And good luck on your Project!

    What Terry said.

I've found lots of great stuff locally on Craigs.

Here's a potential rolling pile o parts for you:

Been on CL for months, FYI.

    Interesting stuff on it.

@Dane, i like that, thx, but I would need to stick with the 72-75 despite the fact, that I can't get it over to Europe only with a bill of sale. well, in parts maybe.

@tarry99: Do you have a recommendation what supplier carries the better parts? I do not know for the intermediates, but i learned the hard way on a windshield frame and corners for my CJ5 when I did them ages ago that measurement and tolerance can vary dramatically.

I would look for a online (or local) seller, who is able to ship all that stuff I need to my buddy in OK, who could arrange shipping to Europe.
There are some on ebay, or google showed me e.g. those here:
    http://collinsbros.stores.yahoo.net/steeltailcj5.html
this could be an alternative since I have friends who could pick those parts up in TX. Or I'll do that when I am on business there.

Since I need Glass, Shield, Tailgate, Rear lights, and lots of other stuff, looking to minimize shipping costs.
I have tons of 75 and up parts, but would like to stay period correct.

Those holes are for the spare tire mount. Four for the mount and one for the side marker light wire to pass through (at least it is on my 75 CJ6).

    Thank you.
Will come back to you regarding the tire mount Gerald.

So, there is some slight progress, bought some parts for the 304, taillights, ordered a new window frame here in germany, agreed a good price for soandblasting the tub and had some reads here on the site.

Have some new questions, again regarding holes in the tub. ;)

What are those for? I don't have those on the '78 CJ5.
Both are at the 'entrance' of the tub, driver and passenger side.
    Any hint or pics appreciated.

    [IMG]Holes?
i assume the lower hole is for the seat mount?

    [IMG]More holes?
I also assume the multiple holes are for the driver seat and to adjust it?

In your first picture, the front hole is the hinge point for a soft top door, the rear hole is for a rod that the door closes aginst, both are for a soft top.
The 2nd picture, those are the holes to adjust the drivers seat, front to back, you were right.

Surprisingly the Bimmer has a sufficient tow capacity of 1800 Kilograms which equals to 3968 pounds.

Had some time today to go to through several boxes with parts which came with the CJ.
Came across the glove box lid and thought, hmmm, why is this gray/silver?
Did the lids have a different color then the dash? My dash seems to be originally blue. The Cover seems not to be repainted.

    [IMG]Glove compartment lid.

And i finally found the data Plate in one of the boxes, thought it is lost and been prepared to start panicking.

    [IMG]VIN Plate

I found out that the CJ is a 73, what is confusing, since the CJ has been ordered Spring 1972 and is build late 1972.
Further the body type comando in contradiction to a no mentioned body Type from e.g. a CJ5? Any Ideas why?

    This vehicle's data:
    Year 1973
Plant /Transmission Toledo - 3-speed, Left Hand Drive
    Engine 304 standard
Model Universal, 101 inch Wheelbase, 4 Wheel Drive
    Body Style Open Body
Body Type & Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) Rating Commando, 3900 lbs
    Engine Code V8, 304 Regular
    Model Year 1973

    Data Plate other entries:
First line below Toledo, etc.. Sales order #: J731822 SSR & O: none
Second line: What number is the 9? Paint: Jet set blue Trim: bucket seats, black vinyl, standard
Third line: The VIN Model number: 8400 (guess a CJ6)

According the Paintref it seems to be the 73 model, since the blue is less dark than on the 72 Paint charts.

    So, enough CJeology for today.

Wow, I haven't seen one of those stickers in years  They were sold through an automotive chain called "Canadian Tire" along with chrome Surfer Foot gas pedals, Dingle balls , Fuzzy Dice, pine tree shaped air fresheners & other absolute essentials. :) Apart from that the door should be body coloured.

In North America model year production begins in the fall of the previous year, so a vehicle built in late '72 would indeed have a '73 serial number.
