The manual for my winch show an oil seal # 42 on diagram, however mine did not have one when I took it apart and does not have a spot on the housing for it ?

What you see in the photo is the back end of the bushing, what am I missing here ?

Mine doesn't have it either- must be a "new" feature.

So on to the next problem. I'm trying to assemble the winch but as soon as I tighten the cover bolts to the 7 ft lbs the shaft will not turn. It is jammed tight until I loosen the bolts and then it turns freely. Is it because I am using rtv for the gasket instead of the required gasket ? Does the gasket act as a shim ? I had some thick gasket paper (not enough to make a gasket) that I put behind some of the bolts and torqued down, and the shaft turned, not real loose but i was able to turn by hand, help!

I siliconed my cover without a gasket & mine turns fine.

Did you have the worm gear off the shaft?

is the inside area of the cover bearing clean?

Yes I pressed the gear off when cleaning everything then pressed it back on. Everything is super clean

I think you pressed it on a little too far.

Yeah, after seeing your question and not being able to fall asleep thinking about it. I figured I might have pressed it on too far. I pressed the shaft back 1/8" and that did the trick. Thanks again Howard

Just out of curiosity, what do your brake pads and springs look like? Mine had almost no wear even after years of winching.

This is the original bushing/bracket. Where the shaft goes thru is brass with a steel plate mounted to frame in area of bell housing

Never seen a setup like that before, course I've probably only seen maybe 2 other complete setups before other than mine. So you have one long driveline going from the PTO to the worm gear huh?

    What PTO are you running?

Actually, my Koenig low mount winch shaft looks about the same, no center bearing.

Seen one piece shafts on the trucks, never on a CJ.
Quite a trick to clear the exhaust, steering linkages and so on.
