Just curious how things are handled when your windshield is in the shed. Does anybody display their inspection sticker someplace other than the windshield? Am I the only person that leaves the windshield at home?

    What inspection sticker?

I'd never leave my windshield at home though, if anything, I just tie it folded down while wheeling.

Yeah, why take it off? Much easier to fold it down! I've driven mine around town by cops with the windshield down and they never pulled me over to see the inspection sticker.

I live in New Jersey. Classic registration is a huge pain in the neck so I'm going straight. In my area there is absolutely nothing for the cops to do other than bust balls about inspection and brake lights being out.

The few times I drove on the street with the windshield down, I decided I did not care for it. In the desert, I sometimes would fold it, but seldom. I typically ran with the side curtains rolled up, rather than topless. Wind buffeting is too bothersome to go topless all the time.

I guess I would ask why you would ever drive a Jeep without a windshield? Even on trails, a flatty windshield isn't wide enough to hit anything. Bugs in the teeth are a good source of protein though right?

IMO, if you don't have a top or bikini on it, you get a lot less rain and dust just leaving it down. Up it just sucks it all in from the back side. I actually like it down for trails also. A lot easier to see what's up front, especially so if it's a high hood. However, I never leave the windshield off and have at least the bikini. Weather around here isn't all that predictable, more so in the mountains.

A Jeep is quite the only car with the possibility of putting the windshield down. And it is very pleasant to drive like this in hot weather. At slow speed, because except with a helmet, there is a risk a receiving something in the face!
    Less pleasant.

I remember a guy on motorcycle, a tourist, he rented it and he stop very urgently near me, he received a big bug in an eye. It was a good lesson, for me, I always kept a protection when riding or driving windshield down.

About the sticker, police is not aggressive with Jeep people, and if controlled I can show it.

Some of the things I have hit on a motorcycle. 2 birds, (foot and helmit) many grasshoppers, rain, hail, snow, of course, many, many bugs and rocks. The most fun was the 2 bees inside of my leather jacket. I didn't know I could ride that far without any hands on the handlebars.

OK back to inspection sticker , Didn't have one in California. and riding with windshield down was no problem . moved back to Virginia , had to get a yearly state inspection . and a city sticker on windshield , first time I went driving around with it down . I GOT pulled over . the PO said the reason I was pulled over was because he couldn't see my stickers . no longer drove with it down on highway

Illegal to do so in PA, or so a local LEO told me. The inspection sticker must be clearly visible. It is not at all visible with the windshield down,.......or off. I hate PA.

I'm thinking of submitting a new state slogan to the governor for his consideration. Pennsylvania.............The No Fun State

Just get a ventilating/safari windshield so you can tip the glass out and still leave it up. That's what I have on my 59 cj5 and my 48 cj2a. I only tip it out about halfway to still give me some protection. And I wear eye protection just in case.

Also I forgot to mention Washington doesn't have a required inspection sticker. xD

I'm saying that windshields are good things, they are there for a reason.

Afternoon rush hour traffic in the summer (80+ degrees F) 5 mph tops, stop and go for 22 miles. I flip it down. Only once in 7 years has a state policeman told me on his Public Address SYSTEM TO RAISE IT BACK INTO PLACE and carry on. We in PA are required to show the tag.

"Illegal to do so in PA, or so a local LEO told me."

I've been told many things by LEOs. Not all of them are true.

Normal use of "Original Equipment" (folding w/s) ought to trump other requirements, IMHO. For instance here in NH we are exempt from seat belt requirements in a car that has never had them. I've never been challenged on a down windshield, as long as I have legal 'eye protection' (sunglasses).

OR - Maybe you could mount a very small inner piece of fixed glass or lexan above the dash, which would display the sticker under all conditions.

On a tangent, one time "the dog ate my sticker." Really.

I believe the actual Washington law does not require an inspection sticker, and does not actually require a windshield. if I understand it correctly you have to have functioning windshield wipers so you cant remove the windshield but since you can fold it down technically you still have wipers and they work. but you would still be required to wear eye protection of some sort in the absence of glass. I normally just wear my Oakley sunglasses which I believe are also impact resistant.

I do not feel safe from thrown rocks and debris and birds and such without the glass. so I never fold down my windshield on the road unless its like a parade. I do however tip out the glass on my ventilating windshields but only about halfway so I still have some protection.

I pretty much always fold my windshield down to the hood when off road. I find it really enjoyable and the visibility is nice but off road I rarely even reach 30mph.

Asked the same question of my local inspection station and didn't get a clear answer. A motorcycle in Missouri has a direct reading inspection sticker on the left fork leg. Wouldn't a clear pocket of lexan (as suggested above) affixed to the driver's side cowl/windshield hinge accomplish the same thing with the automotive sticker, like for instance a pipe buggy without any windows.
Didn't some early Bronco's and Scout's also have fold-down windscreens? How about the VW Thing?

So do I. When I was younger, long ago, I did drive on the French Riviera with windshield down on roads, no problem except for my lungs and I got a strong cold. so now I drive on tracks, slowly but for high speed  better to have good protections and it is not funny to drive with 3 coats, scarves, etc...

I agree shouldn't really be done on the hiway at high speeds but some of our trails are off camber enough with trees in just the wrong spot if the windshield is up you catch the upper corner and destroy the windshield frame. I've come close to doing the same on my '59-5 several times. If not for my wider wheels and tires I would have. Still caught the ws frame but was able to sneak past. If I'd had narrower tires and wheels it would have been toast. It's amazing how much laminated safety glass will flex before cracking and breaking
