    Hi,

It's been awhile, I have a custom H.P. 44 rear with '71-'74' ends the wheel bearing cage (with bearings) is eating up the seals trying to exit the housing (the only thing stopping them is the caliper) this is only after a mile or so!

It seems that I need a bearing cage that can take end thrust and has an out side ring that will sandwich between the outer seal to stop it from backing out? The retainer plate is the 6 hole, flat top and 1/8" thick one.

ANY help is sorely needed (this is the road test before the inspection!!!) On the road again!

    Thanks, Dale

Thanks for the leads as it turns out the bearing that will work is the AK SET 10 but not without issues! The bearing and seal are to thick and bottom out in the axle end before the retainer is flush??? I am having shims made .175" thick which should do the trick. The only other thing I have to do is re-shim the calipers.

Has anyone had this problem or understand what is going on???

    Thanks, Dale

I've never seen a problem like that so long as the parts are assembled in correct order.
First put the outer seal retainer plate onto the axle shaft.
    Then comes the backing plate
    Then comes the outer seal.
    Then comes the unit bearing.
    And finally the bearing collar.

The inner seals go inside the housing tube before the shaft is installed.

You have disc brakes? Was a shim added to compensate for the loss of the thickness of the drum brake backing plate?
Was this a kit purchased as a conversion? (Most kits compensate for the loss of the backing plate, at least the good ones do), or was this a home brew axle and brake conversion?

Yes, I have the SSBC kit and now understand why I need a spacer (there were NO spacers in the kit), the disc caliper plate goes on the outside not the inside. This kit was an ebay item. The spacers should be done tonight and together tomorrow. The axle was purchased on ebay, was custom made and never installed as it lacked spring perches! I guess buyer beware applies here!!!
Thanks for the help, Dale I'll let you know how it turns out!

Well, apparently my machinist didn't see the urgency I did! Obliviously he doesn't understand the Jeep thing! Anyway, the spacers were the missing link, it's all back together and has been down the road for about 8 miles with no issues. Those spacers were 0.175" thick if anyone needs to know.

    Thanks, Dale
