    And back to the Hunt...........

Some of our hunting trips did allow us to operate out of a base camp and bring the tow vehicle nearby to where we were hunting. For all you older fellows check out that rare Alaskan "pop up" Camper ........those were real popular back in the day .......actually had a plumbed hand operated hydraulic system to raise it up........... also a kitchen , table , storage and bunks , heavy but a neat setup.
We even hunted in the California foothills for Blacktail deer and wild pigs as seen here not far from the Bay Area. Could have been a Jeep Commercial.

In Colorado hunting just at the tree line and across the canyon you'll notice the lack of trees reaching into the alpine zone......although these zones will vary some in elevation this was probably at around 9000 ft.
    Another ridge a little lower,
    [IMG]
New Camper and back into the high country......we were looking for and access point into this region.

Last trip this Jeep ever took was in 1980.... we were hunting on / near an Indian Reservation in the Toiyabe forest about 80 miles south of Austin, Nevada ,............about 70 miles of mostly gravel road to get to where we went in..........the rougher the better , Right?
Setting up camp.........you'll notice no overhead camper this trip just thought it would be too rough and It was...............cut wood , make a fire pit and we even brought a tent!

This trip turned out to be especially rough......no trails other than game trails to get up on top. Broke the Jeep twice, First broke a front main leaf, which required a day of travel back to Fallon ,NV. 170 miles away one way. Found a wrecking yard opened there and took a set of front springs off an old Scout that was rusting away. Then towards the end of our stay broke a front drive line back in a real neat remote canyon area. While in there found this old Line Shack that had probably been built in the 1880's to either graze cattle or hunt out of or both.... inside found parts of an early Winchester lever action also in the surrounding area there was allot of Arrowheads scattered about. (We left everything there) Also some trees in a meadow there had some beautiful carvings on them that now were probably 18 feet off the ground, obviously done at eye level at some point in the past...........Wish we could have stayed longer and explored more but we were in full survival mode trying to figure a way out and back to camp with only two wheel drive..........That took all of our talents and then some to make it back by late that evening...........estimated we traveled about 50 miles out of our way always going down or around something that we could traverse in 2 wheel drive.............

And the Reward?..............How about this monster Boone & Crockett non typical Mule Deer hanging at my house? 35 inches across with 10 points on each side........huge deer estimated to be over 300 lbs live weight.

Great story. Makes me think back to when I was younger and running all the wide open land in Kansas, Nebraska, the flat part of Colorado, Oklahoma, and a bit of Wyoming. Man, that was a long time ago.

Sorry folks , been a little busy the last few days, But lets get back to the Journey of my old CJ-5 ..........1980 was the last trip that Jeep every made. After I broke that front drive-line near Ione , Nevada it was towed back home to California and put in the garage. It later was moved to permanent storage at a friends shop.........after dragging that Jeep around for 13 odd years all over the Western US things in my life were changing.............I still loved hunting & I was still involved in Drag Racing .............but Family , Child , Work , Career & Business was now a much larger focus in my life.......
Did I still Hunt? Yes , but on a much different level.........A good friends parents that I was close to got transferred to Twin Falls, Idaho and for the next 10 years Wife, Child , Lab (dog) and I spent Thanksgiving in Twin Falls with them. Why? Will first off we enjoyed each others company , but when he told me about the Duck Hunting in the Magic Valley area I just had to go! ........I scouted out the Snake River , made contacts with landowners there and the second trip back I had a small 14 ft. boat & motor and built some permanent blinds on the river in area's that no one could find or even get close to unless by water. The hunting down in the gorge was pretty much neglected by all the locals .........but would rival any old Duck Hunting episodes of the old American Sportman's series that starred Bing Crosby and Phil Harris back in the day......Crosby & Harris would be bragging about there high dollar Duck clubs in Mexico but they had nothing on our spots down on the river, shooting limits of Mallards in a few hours almost anytime.......and if we did not shoot the river the locals turned us on to the Coyote hunting up North near Shoshone...........So I was pretty much in heaven even though I did not have my old Friend the Jeep with me.

"Family , Child , Work , Career & Business" ...........I'm sure everyone reading this has crossed some or all of these obstacles & responsibilities before while engaging in the basic's of life. So Family and a child Yes, Working and a Career & starting Two business's while consulting in a parallel field for the past 30 years has kept me pretty busy.........I closed one business years back and finally retired from my consulting job in late 2011 , but still have my Transportation Company. One big thing on my bucket list after shedding the consulting gig was to go get my old Jeep and bring it home.

There was an old friend out there that I had not seen for 25 years so I was pretty excited about bringing him home!....................The following pictures are what it looked like in mid 2012........Stored in a windowless climate controlled garage I was amazed at what it looked like notwithstanding all the rubber was just in excellent condition barring the oil seals that were all leaking ....1-flat tire , 1 low tire and the other two you could have driven on............all comments are welcome so chime in!.............. Enjoy the ride!

I did the same thing to my front springs on the '11 Rubicon trip, kinked the main leaf after getting the front shackles flipped backwards. Fortunately the springs didn't break completely and I made it out to pavement.

Has anyone read something like this in a magazine. Seems to me it would be entirely appropriate for a 3 page spread in JP with a little refinement. Not just vintage vault pics. Christian???????????
