Recapped tire

For a 1975 cj5, 31x10.5x15. I drive it 5 miles to the store and back and down the canyon behind the house to the lake. Street legal. Anyone have any experience with recapped tires?

 

AFAIK they are legal - except on the steering axle of semis.

I know a few people that run these and have had no issues although I've heard some shops won't touch them.

I ran a set of Bandags for years on the 3B and never did have a problem. They went about 40k-until the tread wore out. That said, I'm not sure how well they would take a lot of airing down.

 

i was going to get a set of 33x12.5/15 from treadwright since i read several good reviews. but the shipping is expencive and they dont make that size anymore.

 

I worked in a recap shop back in the '70's. every vehicle in the family ran recaps, even on the 19' camper trailer. No seperations or blowouts, just a slow leak in a sidewall somewhere in MT.

I've had more problems with new tires.

For the short, low speed trips you are talking about, caps should be fine.

 

So.........recaps should be ok for my use. But in shopping today I found new all terrain tires for practically the same price as recaps and local store price includes mounting and balancing. Certainly an off brand (can't even remember the name but had never heard of it.....probably chinese). So cheap and new vs recap? What would you choose?

 

Probably cheap and new if you get a decent warranty with the new tires. The biggest issues with re-caps that I've seen is you just don't know how good the casings are on a retread. I would always try and get matching casings as well or you may have size/diameter differences, flexibility/load differences, etc.
plus, if there is an issue with the retreaded tire, can you locally get it warranteed?
Not trying to sway one way or another but things to think about. I'd check the warranty closely on the new a d cheap tires.

I have a set for last 4 or 5 years and still running good. this is daily driver. not alot of off road, but lots of city miles(maybe 5000 a year)

 

One of my friend told me that my Tsl bias 36" is a recap tire, is that right?

 

Nope. Not from the factory. All new tire unless someone had the casings recapped.

I bought a set of these (235-75R-15) for the wife's Cherokee seven years ago for winter tires.

They were matched Michelin made in Canada casings/carcass and have worked well for us. Didn't keep up with tire rotation and have left them on this year because they were getting a bit weatherchecked. Never pushed the snow and ice aspect, was comforting to know they were on there.

 

They just probably look like a recap. The two sets of swampers I have owned started getting a hairline crack at about the side-tread/sidewall "joint", and those sets were radials.

 

Everyone I've talked too that runs Treadwrights has good things to say about them. I almost bought a set of my XJ, but after shipping, it was cheaper to buy new brand at a local tire shop.
