'63 CJ5 w/ Tuxedo Park option package and Koenig full metal cab

Finally got it back together. New seals, bushings, bearings, brake hoses, u-bolts, shocks, etc. I'm going to tow it down to the local power wash to clean all the gunk off the engine before putting the clip back on.

The rear axle is next, then the noisy intermediate shaft gets replaced.

 

It's back together and running again. Brakes, shocks and steering are much better. But, it's far from done. The trans and transfer are coming out for some long overdue work. And the bird's nest of wiring behind the dash and in the engine compartment are going out, new harness going in. Hoping to have all that done by spring.

 

I've started the winter work on this one. Took the top off to make it easier to clean it up, get to things, etc. My wife always liked the top ("keeps the bears out"), but when she saw it with the top off she said, "that's cute". Hmmm. Top may not be going back on.



Previous owners made repairs to burned wires, etc. There's lots of patches that could come loose. I'm going to see if I can clean it up as is before deciding whether or not to put in a new harness.

 

I love the look with the windshield down. I don't envy the wiring work that has to happen although it may clean up nicely and hopefully you don't have to get a new wiring harness.

 

Wiring looks pretty good. If you are planning to change the switches and lighter you may find that doing those items one at a time and rerouting the wires with new ends will help clean it up a lot. As someone on the site has suggested unbolt the dash and lay it down in your lap. it saves laying on your back and kriks in the neck.

 

I like the windshield down too. My wife's decided that the hardtop is not going back on. She wants a roll bar and a white bikini top. We've got a local guy who will make the top for us. But, she likes to be warm, so we'll keep the top to use in cooler weather.

 

Thanks for the suggestions. I definitely don't do wiring work on my back anymore so the dash is already off. I'm going to check all those crimp connections, may take them apart and solder them.

 

Towed it down to the local power wash guy and had the chassis and drive train steam cleaned. Getting closer to pulling the trans and transfer to fix leaks, new intermediate shaft and bearings, synchros and whatever else I find once I get in there.

 

We're back on this one again after being distracted by some other Jeep projects. Clutch, trans and transfer, then the rear axle. And I've about had it with the old wiring harness, so it's getting a new one.

My wife said she wants it ready for summer. But then she said something about wanting it "pretty". "What, you mean it's not?". Hmm, I may be doing some painting.

 

If that metal hardtop isn't going back on, I would love to get it out of your way...

Good build, i like the way the paint looks faded right now, it'd be cool even if you decided not to paint it. And another jeeper from jersey! Keep up the build, wish my progress was as fast as yours.

Making slow progress, life keeps getting in the way.

 

What kind of gauge is that you've got in the input shaft?

 

That's a dial indicator on a magnetic base. Prices range from $30 for a no-name made in China to $200 or more for a Starett or other high quality. Mine's a no name, total cost less than $40.

 

Transfer case is done. The new intermediate shaft should be a lot quieter than the old, heavily grooved, one.



Transmission is apart. It's getting a complete overhaul kit plus synchro unit, new reverse gear and new second gear. New second gear should solve the "jumps out of 2nd" issue.

 

Flywheel turned, new pilot bushing, new clutch, new pressure plate. The transmission is going back together tomorrow.
