304? (excuse me if I'm wrong, I'm engine illiterate.)

Nice clean jeep, my engine bay doesn't look nearly that good.

Automatic transmission in a CJ5? Interesting. Which transmission is it and how long is your driveshaft?

Yes, this is the factory AMC 304. I'm the third owner of this Jeep and from what I was told, it was a cream puff when second owner got it. Second owner was kind of hard on it, so here I am rebuilding the neccessary stuff on it.

I got heads back from machine shop. I dropped bottom end off and ordered the Bulltear timing cover, oil pump set and matching distributor gears. I'll get more pics when parts come in.

Yeah, it's in decent shape for it's age and what it's been through.

Here are a few pics of this money pit...water jackets were nasty and rusty and still are full of scale.

Engine looks good so far, even if you say the jackets are still full of scale.

You can do mine after your done. :)

Hahaha....sure....in my spare time :) Engine definitely was not maintained by po. AMCs are expensive to get machined and parts.

While you have the engine rebuilt, an oil bypass can be a good upgrade. The rebuilt shop that have done the job on my 360 did something similar to this

I could have done that, but no need for a low rpm stock rebuild. I have to figure out if machine shop put front cam bearing in wrong.
