I've searched the forums for spare tire mounts(lots & lots), but I've only seen pictures of the side mounted or the rear bumper setups. How about a mount system that puts the mounts the tire in the bed or attached to the roll cage, but raised up high enough to still allow for storage and tail gate use?

I sit mine on the wheel well.

No fancy mounting except a tie down strap and a bike lock while I get new rubber and a smaller roll bar.

Standing up on the wheel house behind the driver will obstruct your vision the least. That's where I plan to put my CJ-6 spare.

I was going to mount mine in the bed, but with 33" tires there is no room left for gear if you hit the trail over night. even on the wheel well it sticks in way to far. as Tim mentioned mount it on the drivers side if you go that route, it will not impair your vision. mine ended up on the back bumper, That just made the most sense for me.

My 33" has to live on the back as well. I built the mount so I could also store a pair of metal 5 gallon cans behind it for added range.

Seeing out the rear view mirror is greatly diminished, unfortunately.

I am....i'm putting 31's on....and if my measurements are right, I think I can have it laying flat, about wheel well height and bracketed to the roll cage. i'd be able to use the tailgate and store gear under the tire....was hoping that someone has done something like that and had some pics

31's will not be so bad inside the body, when I was measuring up to do kinda a baja style in the bed, the 33x12.50 took up so much room, that's why mine ended up out back.

why not make big lock box that fills the bed, that why your junk stays secure. you could use your tail gate as the access and lock it up. And you could mount tire on top of it as you described....... just a thought.

I gotcha, no back seat, store stuff under the tire. I like the idea, keeps rear departure angle in check. Whatever you do, post some build pics so we can check it out!

With 33 X 12.5's and being old and busted up, I would have a helluva time getting the spare in and out of the bed. I don't even know if I could get it on and off of the swing out mount. So far, I haven't had to try... My future plan is a swing down mount like the one posted above. That way I wouldn't have to lift the spare far and would give me some leverage to get it back in place.

That being said, whenever I hit the trail, I have every square inch of the back of the Jeep loaded. With the spare in there, I'd have to leave a lot of necessities behind.

jason has it right(i just forgot what its called) i want to mount it baja style....it'll be up off the bed floor and supported by the roll cage....either parallel(laying flat) with the wheel well or on an angle....i wont be able to pile up the gear in back, but i wont have to deal with a swing out...

mine is Baja style I quess
mounted solid on an angle and high enough that when I drop off ledges it does not hit and off the roll bar and BUT .... the tailgate cannot be used. Never had a use for opening the tailgate and don't need another point for rattles. I'll have to find it ,I have a thread here somewhere ........
