    Hi All,
I just acquired my 1970 CJ5. It has rust in the floor, front and back and a few of the side panels will need to be replaced too, as well as the rear corners and mounts. I know I can do the work, but if I were to keep my eye out for a replacement tub in better shape what years should I look for? I would like to keep the under seat tank if possible but could always add the side fill to a later model tub if needed. From what I understand the chassis was lengthened in 1972? but the tub is the same through 1975 and would fit my '70 frame? How far back in years can I go as well? If I can find one for reasonable $$ it would save me a lot of work. I know I can buy a new reproduction tub too but looking at original stuff first. I guess if I can't find a good tub I will do the metal replacement but If I do it sure would make the rest of the project easier.
I am still learning all about my CJ5. Thanks for any info.

'55-'75 cj5 tubs are interchangeable, though some small differences exist. Dashes are slightly different and the stamped JEEP in the side of the 55-71 changed to JeeP in '72.

The pedals are different in 74-75 vs the rest (hanging pedals vs floor). The gas tank filler is different 70-75 vs the rest (rear fill vs side). All this can be over come. Also heater location is different.

Thanks for the info! I thought maybe I could go back in years too I just was not sure how far. Right now I am making a plan of what I am going to do. I might be crazy but I would like to keep the original tub and replace the panels. Unless A nice tub comes along which is not too likely since I am in Nebraska.

    I don't think that's crazy.

I always vote for repairing the original tub, if possible.

I repaired mine, used old tool cabinets to make up the wasted metal. Borrowed a small shear and metal brake from a friend, wire feed to fab in patches. I even built hat channel. It was labor intensive, but looking back it was worth it. Go for it.
