I did the relay and heavy gauge wiring trick on my CJ5 with plain old sealed beam halogen lights and they are much brighter than my CJ8 with stock wiring and sealed beam halogen lights. Definitely a worthwhile and easy low cost upgrade, and I would consider it mandatory if upgrading to an H4 style light.

I'm going to guess that 99.9% of people will never know or be able to tell the difference between a sealed beam and halogen from a distance, let alone up close.

Just put 'em in and use 'em, IMHO.

They're on the shelf. I pulled them out of the CJ when I sold it. I did have them working in it. I put a piece of insulated wire inside the circumference of the retaining ring to "shim" them. It worked, but I wasn't happy about it.

You can't have both. Fact of life. You need to make a decision on what you want then go for it.

My first set of halogens was that- Regular, or at least fairly regular, looking lenses & H4 bulbs. After a while the reflective coating started corroding though. Similar to this-

Again, with the "legal" 55 watt bulbs your genny & existing wiring (provided they're in reasonable shape) should be fine.

I believe all the DOT approved bulbs and reflectors are going to look like regular headlights, except brighter.

Aren't there halogen bulbs you can buy that do not have replaceable bulbs? I thought these sold on the shelf at places like WalMart. Those would be 100% plug and play, and look like the factory incandescents - except for the color of the light.

I was thinking of this one as a possibility they are a well known manufacturer have a replaceable h4 bulb only downside is it is a clear lens. They are pretty cool looking and when i buy me a more modern jeep capable of highway driving this will likely be the lights id use hands down.

I did the Hellas on my A1, and I LOVE them. And I never go faster than about 30 mph but consider it a must do upgrade. I did Hellas in my MB as well with 80/55 bulbs. I have the Autopals in my 240z, but I ordered another set of Hellas to put in sometime in the future FWIW. I also did the Hellas in my newly acquired '79 CJ5.

Those are what I have in my CJ with the relay upgade. They are plenty bright. The Silverstars in my XJ are a little brighter. The only real difference is the Silverstars put more light to the sides of the road, which is good for seeing Deer sooner.
