My son was driving my 86 CJ7 down the hwy moving along about 65mph in 5th gear when all the sudden the motor just revved up like it had popped out of gear.
Turns out it seems something has malfunctioned in the transmission. The only gear that will move the Jeep is 4th. None of the other gears including reverse have any effect, it's like it is still in neutral. No noise or sounds coming out of the gearbox. Low range works, but only 4th gear so the transfer case is good. This jeep has been a DD status vehicle since new, only off road a few times and that was on fire roads types of trails. 135K on the clock. It has the T5 transmission but never abused. I know it's going to have to come out but anyone have any ideas on what's going on in there? Should I attempt to rebuild it myself or use it as a core and try to find one sitting on the shelf somewhere... :?

If the T5 is anything like my T18 to rebuild it was pretty easy with a diagram and the occasional extra hands when re-installing. I guess it just depends on how much faith you have in your own skills. My T18 took the weekend.

Alan, if you dont' wanna deal with rebuilding it yourself, I've done business with Anaheim Gear up near you a few times. I won't recommend a place unless I've used 'em myself with great success. They keep a huge selection of used gears, shafts, etc on hand and are really good with manual gearboxes. Even if they're not doing the rebuild work, I think you can probably source the rebuild/replacement parts through them.

I believe it's always best to rebuild what you already have, rather than throwing money away on someone else's "rebuilt" transmission; you get what you pay for.

If you deside to repair the transmission yourself and want, I can send via e-mail a T5 rebuild manual.

Thanks for the encouragement guys, I'm going to do it myself. Dummy I trust Anaheim Gear, I've used them before and they are very close to me which matters too. 45es I'll take you up on your offer, shooting my email address over...
I'll post how it goes. Probably going to pull it this holiday weekend.

Yes. I did it with my T15 with a broomstick stuck through a hole in my work table.

Got the Trans and T-case out today. Right now they're sitting in the back of my pick-up and tomorrow I'll get em cleaned up with the pressure washer along with the skid plate. They are caked with oil, mostly from the well designed leaky plastic valve cover that I fought for years until I got a cast aluminum valve cover. It has a nice thick flange. Looks like a new trans mount is in order.
I'm going to seal up the D300 while it's out and probably the D44 & D30 pinion seals while I'm at it. I got lucky with this Jeep when we got it back in the 80's, it has the D44 and not the AMC20 ;)
