    I have a 1970 Jeep with V6, T-14 transmission, D-18 transfer case.

    Question:

I have a chance at buying the transmission out of a 1950 willys truck. From my research, a 1950 jeep truck should have a T-90 transmission.

Will the T-90 bolt in? Do I need a adapter? Is it a good transmission with the V6?

The Willys trans could be either a T90C (six cylinder) or T90A for the Fhead. Neither will be a bolt-in replacement for a T14 and IMO, you will not be gaining any strength. In short, not something I would do.

If the Willys does have a T90C with the long input and the price was cheap, I would likely pick it up anyway as they work well with GM conversions.

Not really. The T-14 was supposed to be an upgrade to the T-90 but it is not a whole lot stronger although it does have a syncroed 1st gear that the T-90 does not have. The bolt pattern for mounting to the bell-housing is different and there is a bell-housing with a built in adaptor for the T-14. You will need to do some research to see what you need to install the T-90 to your V6. I am using that combo at present in my Tux (T-90 w/V6) and have to be very careful with the use of the throttle especially in 4WD.

Thanks for the input.......I will pass on it.

The guy is hauling the axles, Transmission and transfer case to the scrap yard. I am going to grab the transfer case.

Pardon my piling on ... The T-14 has both a different front bolt pattern, and a different output spline count than the T-90. Plus the issues with the input shaft length and non-synchromesh 1st gear. Only similarity is it's from a Jeep and it's a Borg-Warner 3-speed - otherwise different. Definitely a downgrade from the T-14.

If it has the long input shaft, save it. The input shaft sells for ca $200 new, and is still in demand.

Do you need a new transmission? IIRC Herm has a pretty good offer for rebuilt B-W 3-speeds, exchange. He has the shipping worked out too. www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com

My T-14 needs rebuilt....I bought a rebuild kit from herm but I feel it might be more difficult to do for me........$200 - $300 @ local transmission shop with my parts. This guy came along and I thought his T-90 might be an affordable quick solution.

I see. Well, if you think doing the rebuild is beyond you, you could box up the kit and the transmission and send it to Herm. I'd expect him to give you credit on the parts for the rebuild. Sounds like it would be a couple hundred more than the local shop is quoting you, assuming you don't need more parts.

"The guy is hauling the axles,"

The 1950 truck may have the "clamshell" rear differential axle. Hard to find, you might want to grab it for someone that needs one.

    FYI - I believe 1950 truck was 4-cylinder F-head engine only...
