I disassembled the 3 spd because it would grind some in first gear and was hard to engage at times. I tore it completly apart, replaced all bearings and syncronizer rings. I actually found nothing else wrong in the transmission except that the front (3rd) syncro ring was very much worn. The shifter assembly looks fine, no wear. I was very careful to keep everything in order and reassemble just as it was. However it being a 77 model, there is no guarantee it was right when I tore into it. Any ideas? I dreadtaking it out again and am considering trading it for something I can use...god only knows what that might be.jeep toss

You say it's still broken but do not tell us what it's doing Now. That would be helpful.

I'm sorry, guess that would help huh? It's doing the same thing it did before, Grinding when I try to put it into first gear and jumping out of first also. It is not as bad as it was but still happens often. It is as if the shifter is reaching the back of its travel before the fork travels enough forward to engage. I see no reason for this. I can really "snatch" back on the shifter and make it engage but it barely does. When I had the transmission out on the bench with the top off the sliding rings seemed to be engaging perfectly by hand. I will remove the top again and see if I can see anything from there. At 62 I am getting too old to lay under that thing and fight it tho I have been doing this kind of work for 30 years.

Check the 1st reverse shift fork for wear. Common issue. Also check and make sure the clearance between the 3rd gear synchronizer assembly (sleeve) and input gear is not too great. This would indicate the mainshaft is too far back and something has wear or is loose. Check and make sure the first speed gear does not have too much play. This can cause the same issue. The thrust surfaces commonly wear between the gear and synchronizer hub. You did remember to install the spacer between the first speed gear and the snap ring right? Easily missed.

Thanks for the input. I did install the spacer, replaced all the snap rings and thrust washers. I took the top off again tonite, the shifter still looks ok, rails and forks too. I am not seeing too much slack in the main gear shaft assembly IMO either. However, I have about decided that the 1st gear teeth are worn too much causing my problem. Not having a new one or even a "good" one to go by it's hard for these old eyes to tell.I know that with the cover off, I can use 2 screwdrivers and move the sliding sleeve foward and the gear engages good, but it probably does not travel that far forward with the shifter top assembled. I sure hate to pull this back apart but it's either that or trade it. I have a manual for this jeep but it is 400 miles away and not much good to me :^(
I took a picture of the gears with the cover off but it is such poor quality I won't post it. Thanks again for the advice.

Is the synchro hub/sleeve installed the correct way ?
The sleeve the shift fork fits into.
