Did you drain part of your radiator to drop the coolant level before pulling the manifold?

No, like a dummy I just tore into it. Like I said I'm a newbie when it comes to this, and that is why I said live and learn. Because that's usually how I learn, by doing something bass ackwards:oops:. Won't be making that mistake again... I PROMISE! I knew what I was unhooking etc, but never even thought about draining some of the coolant. [IMG]

    Yeah, had to be mice

Guaranteed these machines help us learn! I took my manifold off my 304 for the first time last year.

Did you inspect your intake ports? use a compressor or a strong water hose or somthing and blow/wash/spray through ALL intake ports from the bottom through the top and visa versa. they could have a nest in the intake or just general crap down there. I have done the same thing with the anti freeze but i got lucky enough where none of it went down into the oil ports or by the lifters and just got some to puddle like yours so a few shop towels to soak up the water and I was good to go.

I haven't flushed the ports out yet. I tried investigating it the best I could and nothing came out of the ports when I shook it back and forth. I'm planning on taking my pressure washer to it and spraying out the ports real good and then probably blow it out with my compressor. I also was thinking about putting a fresh coat of paint on the valve covers and manifold while I have them off. Think that's overkill on an engine that I haven't even cranked yet? I guess I need to search the forums on the closest matching blue paint for the covers. I know I've read some posts about that blue color recently....

Well rusty, I guess the mice cleaned up before I evicted them from their home in the Jeep because I took my 3000+ psi pressure washer to it yesterday afternoon and there was nothing there. I guess my first thoughts were right about the corn being stuck in the carb and without thinking about it I played with the manual choke on the dash and when I did, it dropped the corn in the manifold. So that is the best news that everything is clean down there and no nests or mice junk in there! I was really expecting the worst so I'm happy I was wrong :)
Here is a picture after I pressure washed it inside and out. Is lacquer thinner the best to get grease off or is there something else I can use that maybe isn't so toxic? The pressure washer got a good bit of grease and stuff off, but it's still gonna need a little scrubbing and a degreaser. Any suggestions on what works good?

Also, Can You guys tell me the best place to order the gaskets, etc for the 225? Should I just go to local parts store or is there a better place I could order online and get it shipped to me?
    Thanks

i was looking at the pictures that you posted when you picked it up and you have a dana 30 in the front of that thing my friend. i noticed that it had the one piece tie rod and looked at the knuckles and it is an open knuckle. also i'm pretty sure it has the 11" drums all around as there is e-brake cables going to rear axle. hopefully the gear ratio is the same in both axles. i can't tell if it is a tapered or flanged rear axle because of the cover on the rim.

Thanks for spotting that John, I will have to check those axles and figure the gear ratios for sure. is there an advantage/disadvantage to the dana 30 over the 27 that should be there? One more thing to sort out on this pile of parts, otherwise known as my 70 CJ5:rofl:.

Dana (aka spicer) 27 was stock. Dana 30 is a better axle, thats what AMC used from 72 on. Stronger and better turning radius. it is an upgrade I want to do to mine after the kids are through school. Also a lot of possibilities for differential locking that is available for the 30 but not for the 27. I wouldn't be surprised if you had a locker of some type, if they went to the trouble of putting on a 30.

The intake still has some of the original color paint on it you can see now that it is clean.

That's great to know about the axle. I was hoping it was an upgrade from the 27. It also has Warn Locking Hubs on the 30 which I'm sure is a plus to have(if everything works properly). I am definitely going to try and figure out the gearing, but is there any way to know for sure without having to disassemble the axles? I know there should be markings somewhere on the axle, but you would have to open it up to make sure that the gears haven't been swapped out, correct? I would hope that whoever swapped the axle had the knowledge to match the right gear ratios for the front and rear, but I guess you couldn't know for sure until you took them apart. I'm also happy that it looks like it has the 11" drum brake upgrade. The brakes will have to be totally gone through as they do nothing at this point but go straight to the floor.

Yeah, when I started pressure washing the intake I was surprised to see some of that pretty blue paint underneath. I think I'm gonna try cleaning it up a bit more and maybe paint it and the valve covers before reinstalling them. Just got to find a good paint color to match the original color the best I can.

Pull the rear cover and count the teeth on the ring gear and the pinion then divide...wouldn't hurt because the gear oil probably needs changed anyways

Don't forget to change the gear lube in the tranny and transfer case too. :)

The locker I am refering to in the axle is the locking differential, not the hubs. Also, if you want the gear ratio, you can jack the front end up, make sure he t case is in neutral, BLOCK THE WHEELS, rotate the tire 1 time (exactly) and count the turns of the pinion/drive shaft, then do the math. Then do the same on the rear, should be the same results. Make sure to know whether you have a limited slip differential or not before you start swapping lubes, they take a special lube. When you get to it. You have enough on your plate.

Oh yes, that will also be on the long list of things to do as well. Will be a while before that day comes - Thank goodness I'm in no hurry on this and I'm glad I've got great folks on this forum to help prevent and fix mistakes I make along the way.

There was a member who painted his engine/valve covers and posted pics a couple months back. It was very pretty. I'll see if I can find the thread. I think he put the color numbers in the posts.

Thanks Grant, that's what I thought you meant when you mentioned the locker - I have never driven a Jeep that had lockers, but I do know a little about them. I just mentioned the warn hubs on it because I don't think I ever mentioned them before and since I was on the subject of the front axle I thought I would mention them. And thanks for the idea on figuring out the gear ratio above. I will give that I try when that day comes down the LONG road ahead. I'm just trying to take baby steps. Don't want to get too much on my plate at once. Also very helpful info on needing specific lubes for the limited slip differential - and honestly, at this time, I have no idea what I have, but will get to that when the time comes....
    Thanks guys

Thanks Grant, I think I may have read the same thread some time ago, but of course I didn't bookmark it. If you happen to stumble upon it that would be great.
