based on these thicknesses, i have a quick question before i get started with the final assembly...

i have researched several web sites (miller, lincoln, etc) and i am getting conflicting info...

for the welding... should i use .035 WITH gas... or .035 WITHOUT gas...

    TIA guys!

What machine do you have? If you have a small 100 amp machine, you may need to use flux wire. Flux wire will produce a "hotter" weld and allow you to weld thicker metal.
If you use gas it will give you a better looking weld and a lot less spatter.

    hey PieLut!

    i have the lincoln weldpak 3200... its a 110V

it welds well (from what i can see) and i have had no problems with anything i have made SO far....

i just want to make sure im using it the right way as some of this stuff is WAY heavier than what i am used to (the steel yard had heavier stuff vs what you specified)

i can do either gas or flux

and just to put it out there... i have decided that i would NEVER make it as a machinist... could be the tools, but my money is on the operator chainsawguy... just call me the metal butcher!

flux core is fine if you don't have the tank and accessories for gas,
10lb spool of 30 flux core is all I have ever needed in my 110v C/H

35 flux, unless you have gas on hand mine is rated 3/16" for both 35 mig and flux
just clean it well and don't forget your duty cycle
drill and bolt or gusset if you get concerned about anything, steel is cheap

    I DID IT!!!

i actually made something that LOOKS like the plan!!

i went ahead and used the flux core wire and started the assembly of my rotisserie...

i only got 1 end done, as it took longer than i thought it would..and i'm still not sure everything will line up on the tub itself (its stuffed into a corner at the moment)... but its ok... because, as you know, working with metal is a whole lot easier than working with wood... i can put metal back together and start over if i need to ;)

ONE thing is sure, i ll never make it as a paid welder anywhere... but the practice will prove to be invaluable...

    Thanks PieLut for the plans...

heres the pix of the tailgate 1/2

yes, the bolts are way too long, but they helped me keep the nuts square and the shorter ones will be coming via brown santa today

the 90* vise i got at northern does a SUPER job of keeping things square... it holds different diameter materials too.. was $55

probably THE best weld of the night

    Tailgate stand COMPLETE!

sorry for the blurry... these are from my phone... once i get the other side completed, i ll take some with my real camera

THANKS again, PieLut for the plans, and everyone else for your input... i see HUGE progress on the horizon!

OK guys... except for a few tweaks (fitment at the tail gate and firewall, and the bolts for same) some additional bolts on the 105er to keep it together while moving it, and a coat of paint...

    IM DONE!

    WOO HOO!!!

thanks PieLut for the plans and everyone else here for the advice and the help... with any luck i ll get the tub out of the corner (NO one puts tubby in the corner) and onto the twirl-a-whirl...

Nice! I used an engine hoist to suspend my tub so I could put it on the rotisserie.

thanks posi... this really IS the first thing ive ever built from plans... everything else comes from my BB in a tin can

good idea! on the engine hoist

    i dont have one... YET

but i DO have some super strong steel saw bucks that i acquired from my last place of employment... before the repo man could get them... they might be high enough.. if not, i ll raise them on blocks... hope to have it mounted this weekend

I started to think about a "rope ratchet" with a block and tackle.

have one end at hand then the ratchet pulley on the rotisserie then, a pulley on the tub, then a normal pully on the rotisserie, I'm not sure how many loops you need but with 4 corners it should be very controlled and with enough rope you can pull all 4 up at once like a popup camper.
the ratchets will keep it from falling back down.

I made an A frame out of wood and used a chain hoist (cheap from Harbor Freight). In this pic it's only supporting the front of the tub, but I was able to suspend the entire tub from it as well. I used "eye hooks" through the tub/body mount holes and lightweight chain with carabiner type latches to get it to balance. Lift up tub, roll out frame. In this pic the rear is still on the rotiserrie.

I hear that. When I retired I lost my shop space. Now I'm stuck in a dinky 1 car garage. Makes Winter projects a little tough and cramped!

i hear ya bruddah... i have so much stuff in my garage, it may as well be a 1 car..

thats where we do ALL of our projects... in fact, i was in there last night cutting trim for the dining room... with the chop saw on my welding table..

good thing i can get to the cooler and the tools with ease!...

hope to paint the twirler this weekend... need some more primer and then find the right color of safety yellow... pix to follow (keep fingers crossed for trouble free mounting of the tub)... but i thinki have some attachment tweaking to do in the back... i dont think my tailgate hinge holes are in the right place... and im going to mount the fire wall mounts to the JEEP first and see where the fall on the crosspiece...

this project has made me re-learn the work smart, not hard lesson... and its made me more creative round the house too...

i built a thing to help keep the dogs in my daughters yard between the fence and the house... the footer/slab sticks out too far to have the fence butt up to the house... so i used a couple fence posts and some rebar and my handy-dandy new sissy drill press and made a barrier... not pretty, but functional as all get-out

have welder, will construct :) chainsawguy:beer:

Doesn't matter if it's a 1 car garage or a 40x60 shop like mine. There is never enough room.

    OK peoples...

after some tweaking and drilling some new holes in the JEEP... its DONE!

the new rotisserie is up and fully functional!

i cant thank PieLut enough for the plans and you all for your votes of confidence!!!

heres some pix that i got last night.. i was going to wait til this weekend to try to mount the tub, but i said WTH and went ahead and did it..

    it works GREAT!

    on the saw bucks

some brush cup work on the firewall... think im going to rhino-liner it

    side (obviously)

after getting everything put away for the night... kinda cramped in here

anyone know what color this is? i THINK its the Golden Eagle Brown...

the floor pan on the PS... gonna try to patch these holes, but i need thinner wire in the welder... if not, i ll cut and patch

patch attempt shows the wire is too heavy and the voltage is just TOO hot... even at 'A'... i didnt blow those holes through, just tried to patch the ones on the left

birthmark... reminds me of the 666 on Damiens head in 'The Omen'

    thanks again everyone!
