So I have my starter issues resolved. Now I am at the point of trying to start the engine for the first time after the rebuild.

The engine cranks and at times acts like it wants to start but basically coughs through the carb. Smoke from burned fuel comes back up through the carb at that point.

It's not quite a backfire because I haven't been able to get it to completely turn over yet.

This is how a prepped it for first fire...
    1. took out #1 plug
    2. rotate crank by hand until air came out of hole and the timing mark was at TDC...when checking the spark plug hole the piston was right there.
    3. I set in the distributor and made sure the rotor was pointing to the number 1 spark wire position after it was fully seated.

    Here's the specs:
    360
    MSD6
    TFI duraspark
    Spark gap at 48
    MC2100 (rebuilt)

If it does backfire into the carb is that because the timing is too much after TDC? Just wondering if I should try advance or retard first. (I'll be doing this by myself)

Could I be 180 off? What does it do then?

Hum i'm not the best with engine but i've been couple time trying to figure timing on my 360. Are you sure when you're setting the #1 piston at the tdc mark that the piston is in compression mode? It could be set as expulsion mode so you're tring to fire up exhaust fume....i think that you are in that's the situation at the moment. If i use my logic you have backfire because the piston ignite when it just start sucking the air/fuel mixture in it so having no compression at the moment fire goes thru the carb.

If you want to make sur you're set a the good position, put the timing mark on the crank 1/2 turn from the tdc mark so the piston will be at bottom of the cylinder. Take off the valve cover and ask someone to turn the engine while you look at the rocker....while the piston is getting back to the top of the cylinder, if you see one rocker getting up that mean you are in expulsion mode. You are not suppos to see any rocker moving during the up stroke. That way you will be sure that you are in compression mode.

If you are at TDC compression both rockers will be in the neutral position, both valves will be closed. if TDC exhaust, 1 rocker will be down holding the exhaust valve open.

    Thanks guys...I got it done!

After 6 years of work off and on...it fired up tonight!!!

I had the timing out 180 degrees. Kicked right over when I corrected it.

Wow, I can hardly believe it.
