If the pin wont clear, I think you will need to pull them. Others with more knowledge may know a trick.

depending on how thick the ring gear is, you will have to separate it from the carrier to get the spider gears out.

If the pinion shaft hits the ring gear then you will need to pull the axle shafts. Then remove the differential assembly and separate the ring gear from the CASE. Then the pinion shaft and pinion gears (spider gears) can be removed.

Yeah my ring gear almost completely covers the pin... I had hubs off it to put new seals in but never had axle out, is it hard to pull? I only worked on stuff w c clips or the bolt in Dana 60 types, never pulled a tapered

It'll come out with a little persuasion. If it's never been out before you might need some form of case spreader but usually a couple of crowbars/prybars will pop it loose.

That sux really don't want to pull the axles... No preloads / backlash or anything have to be set? It's just shimmed correct?

See how much end play you have now. If it's within limits put the shims back in the original locations.

There are shims to set your axle end play, but you should be able to reinstall the axles with the same shims. Keep track of them, which shims were on which side. The axle bearing outer races will pop out of the axle housing with a little slide hammer action after you remove the hubs and bearing retainers. You can use your brake drums as the slide hammer weight, take the drums off the hubs, put the hubs back on the axles (lightly) and put the drums back on the hubs turned backwards with the lug nuts only on a few turns. If you can move the drums in and out 1/2 or 3/4 inch on the hub studs you can get enough impact to pull the bearing races out of the axle housing.

Why do you want to pull the spider gears, are you installing a lock-rite?

I wish I were installing a lock rite but unfortunately I'm cheap and stupid so -that said I'm going to hope a fozzy lock holds up in the rear as this is mainly used off road and to plow my driveway mayb in the future I'll afford a lock rite. I have been looking into the fozzy lock a lot and nobody that actually did this mod had a problem with it .... Unless they are really really beating it
