what size cable is on these pto winches?
The one I have has what seems like tiny cable compared to most I’ve seen.

5/16" or preferably 3/8" would do the job.

King Winch (Koenig) specified 150 feet of 5/16" 6x19 hemp-center with "8000# test" as being provided with the winch.

I was thinking at least 3/8 to be safe rather have bigger than needed cable it’s got something like 5/16 little cable. It didn’t seem right. I’ll go see what some 3/8 will be

Having had a Koenig King with 3/8" cable I would opt for the 5/16" for ease of dragging cable out to attach point. The bigger cable stays coiled up and will actually unwind with the PTO lever disengaged to find it's happy place.

Just look at the shipping weight for 100ft or 3/8 versus 5/16 Also rated at 8K

I hadn’t looked at the rating yet. Guess I just figured 3/8 would be better/stronger. I have a local place to get cable so no shipping for me. And 8,000 should be plenty overkill for my 3,000 pound Jeep haha
Never had a winch on a vehicle just a lot of the tow trucks I ran.
    Thanks for all the help.

Look at the last few posts for my pics of my koenig and the big arse 3/8" cable. note the cable cage the PO used to keep the cable from jumping the drum and taking out the release handle and drum brake again. I loved that winch, it was a beast

    What winch and winch mount?

I'd suggest that 3/8" cable allows for more wear and tear if you use a PTO winch as much for serious work as I do.

One of the owners at the fab shop I used to work at used 1/4" aircraft grade steel cable on his hunting JEEP-his idea was to always have snatch blocks and tree straps and such. I saw it work to his advantage more then once so I guess it had some merit. BTW-you can get some amazing length on a winch spool with that small of cable.

1/4" "aircraft" cable is rated at only 1400 lbs. working load. Breaking strength is only 7000 lbs. Much less than a PTO winch can pull.
