Does anyone know of a source for or location for factory photos of the engine compartments of the various CJs?

I bet Willys / Kaiser had lots of them that were later destroyed, but maybe there are still some out there somewhere....

Factory service manuals have some of course. Seems like you might be looking for more than just those though?

Yeah, the engine compartment photos I've seen in the FSMs tend to be relatively low-resolution. Hoping to find something better, assuming they even exist. I'll have to try some of the automotive literature places.

That's what I've done for years, and once in awhile have found vintage CJ's with fairly unmolested 50+ year old engine bays that I've downloaded photos of. But I'd really like to find some factory photos of the engines when new if possible.

Interesting to see the engine shown not having the oil bath, as the Jeep shown is a early 1966 v6, (still has the snorkel cut out)

Thank you for posting this, Ron! As Roy noted above, the absence of the oil bath air cleaner is interesting. I'm guessing this may be a very early photo of the Dauntless with a Buick paper air filter housing, before the oil bath type was adopted.

Though I haven't located any factory engine compartment photos yet, I was reminded of this very early (October 1965 manufactured) '66 Tux engine - which has less than 3k original miles on it and appears to be almost, if not completely unmolested (photos from 1966 Jeep 8322 CJ-5A Tuxedo Park Mark IV | MBP Motorcars and other sites):

Even the Packard Radio spark plug wires on the above motor may be the originals - see "Date Coded Spark Plug Wires" here: Exact Reproduction Spark Plug Wire Sets for Classic & Muscle Cars:

Engine compartment photos from largely unmolested CJs like this one may be the closest thing to factory photos that are available today.

I looked through all the vintage Jeep brochures I've collected over the years to see if they had any good original photos of the engine bays or the engines themselves. This image, from a Sept. 1965 dated Jeep brochure entitled "Unstoppable ", shows a version of the V6 with a 4-bladed fan. Note the paper filter type air cleaner and the position of the coil. The theory that this is actually a pre-Dauntless Buick V6 is possibly confirmed by the fact that the same V6 image appears here: The Novak Guide to The Buick 90 Degree V6 Engine)

This nearly identical image is from a slightly later version of the Unstoppable brochure. In place of the 4-blade fan this shows a 5-blade fan, but it doesn't have the unequal blade spacing of the actual factory-installed 5-blade V6 fans. This probably indicates that it's an early rendition of the Dauntless (though likely just an airbrushed revision of the Buick V6 image):

I also found several examples of the same image of the Dauntless that was pictured in the late 1965 postcard above, with the paper filter type air cleaner housing and unequally spaced 5-blade fan. The factory-installed oil bath air cleaners may have gone into usage right around this time frame, which could explain why one wasn’t featured in the postcard photo:

This comes from a late 1965 brochure entitled "Jeep Engines and How They Go ", showing what appears to be the same motor on the postcard from a different angle:

An image and description of the Hurricane from the same brochure:

Confusing to say the least. All of the air cleaners I have seen have all been black, including the fan and pulley. These pics show a red variation. So the question is, which is correct?

As Ron noted above re. the postcard photo, "engine might be dressed for card". That could explain the red air cleaner housings, fans, etc. in these images.

In a 1969-dated Kaiser International Jeep Universal brochure meant for distribution in the UK, I found these images of the Dauntless and Hurricane:

These photos are from a Jeep brochure dated March 1970, which was right after AMC took over from Kaiser. Talk about "dressed up"....these engines look like they're outfitted for a carnival!:

Lots of artistic license in the factory photos! These are certainly not representative (color wise) of what came off the assembly line. These last two renditions were clearly showing off the air pump and emmisions equipment.
Its interesting to see the F head with the bypass oil filter located down under the starter. I've never seen one installed in that location.
I'm used to seeing the starters originally painted black, and iron exhaust manifolds in bare iron.

Picking up on your observation re. the V6 coils, these photos show the three factory stock coil locations on the 1966-'67 Dauntlesses that I'm aware of, in the order in which they appeared:

    1) 1966 CJ-5A (manufactured in October '65):

    2) 1967 CJ-5 (manufactured in August '66):

    3) 1967 CJ-5 (manufactured in January '67):

Were there more factory coil locations on the Dauntless in addition to these three?

To the best of my knowledge, the third location shown above was used through 1971.

Thanks, Roy! I take it these coil locations are the same ones you're aware of?

I hope some folks who are more knowledgeable about them than I am will post any photos they may have of Hurricane engines and relatively unmolested F134 engine bays.

I knew of the two locations, but not the one on the passenger side of the carb.

I remembered today where I'd seen pictures of a virtually original F134 engine compartment.

This website features photos and a video of a nearly pristine 1962 CJ-5 "Time Capsule" with less than 13k original miles. It was discovered and purchased a few years ago by George Baxter, owner of Army Jeep Parts. George does a detailed walk-around of the Jeep in the video:

Sell A Jeep Stories: Time Capsule CJ5 Jeep Universal (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

I’ve downloaded the site’s photos of the engine compartment below, and also added some screen shots taken from the video:
