I don't know about you folks but I'm always trying to re-organize the space around my shop equipment...........I've been having some tool issues with my lathe lately.....kept breaking Cut-off blades , Had to reevaluate what I had and perhaps upgrade......after doing some research I was not using a strong or stable enough tool for the job...........so I bought some more tools from Aloris quick change in New Jersey , which further cluttered up my work Station.........my solution was a nothing fancy , quick and easy to build 18 gauge sheet metal shelf mounted above the existing one.........18"w x 6"d x 1-3"tall........took about and hour to get it to paint.

    Here's the clutter,
    [IMG]
Shear a piece of 18 gauge
    [IMG]
    Scribe the measurements
    [IMG]
Notch the corners.........you can also cut these with a Jig saw or tin snips
    [IMG]
    Brake up the corners
    [IMG]
    And your new shelf
    [IMG]
Weld up the corners or tack them doesn't take much.........I also just welded the bottom braces to the shelf , Put some 1"holes in there for tools and later installed rubber grommets in the holes.

    Paint......dry overnight and Finished

Nice. you spring for real aloris stuff and not phase 2 or whatever. I wish i had room for a nice pexto brake and any jump shear. I found a 60's snap on top box that i put all my lathe stuff in. Found it in the dump. no lie. old and perfect. all my mill tooling lives in an old lyon drawer set.

I use the aloris AXA and it works great for me. It is well suited to the 13" throw I have. I had trouble for a bit with cut off issues. I had to make sure I was as square to the stock as possible. When they break you can be injured, not to mention its kind of scary.

I have a problem with my chuck. It is clausing 6300 that has the original chuck. Pratt branerd? I guess its worn out because i have real trouble getting my stock concentric. It has 3 socket head scores that are wedges for centering your work. they are just trouble for me. The spindle is L00 which is difficult to find a replacement for. I guess I need to figure out how to adapt a d-1 style mount to the L00 backing plate I will need to buy.

Hey Thanks 47v6 , Yes this was supposed to be an instructional post on how easy it is to make some extra storage space for your tool goodies..........kinda like Metal shop in High school.........Humm do they still have Metal shop in High School?

And yes it is nice to have a little 2 ft shear, box and pan break and a 2 ft slip roll.........I've had those for decades would feel lost without them...........and Aloris just had a big sale, might be still on 15% off and free shipping........cheaper than any of the other brands and hacks on the internet...........and you know the quality.

I went a little nuts and bought enough storage for all my tools. All cheap vintage craftsman commercial and homeowners from the 60's and 70's, mac and even some old waterloo. The craftsman homeowner is from 1974 and is grey and red. The person i bought it from inherited it from her father and she took it out of the packing boxes shortly before i bought it. even came with the sales brochure. real NOS.

got a stanley vidmar rolling 10 drawer for 125 bucks like new too. lucky there.

So wish i had the room for brake, slip roll and jump shear. I see them often for sale.
