Been surfing the net and a quick search here. Tons of opinions and electrical theory on the web. Some good stuff here but not a lot. So,.............

Looking for real world experience with running a winch on a car trailer with a stand alone battery (not hooked to tow vehicle's charging system). I may eventually spend the money to make a better set up but, for now, I need to get to hauling JEEPs.

The winch is believed to be no more than a 4500 lb MileMarker. I just need to be able to winch a V6 cj5 with a hardtop up onto the trailer, another couple of similar cj5s, and a truck. Not all the same day so, I'll time to recharge a battery in between vehicles.

Will a stand alone deep cycle marine battery mounted beside the winch allow me to load a jeep onto the trailer? How long will the battery last?

Let's assume a rolling jeep on basically level ground, up the trailer ramps.

I've read here that some of you do this and have no issues. Hoping for the same result. I've already spent more on making this trailer operational than I had planned and am behind schedule.

    Thanks gents.

What jeep? Wheels turning or locked up? How far from it's resting place to the trailer?

Basically your question is unanswerable. :(

Get the biggest deep cycle unit you can find at the junkyard.

Or two 'cause junkyard batteries are cheap.

Wire a 20 ohm 20 watt resister from your trailer's tailliight circuit to the battery, it will charge up fine as you drive.

Recently did just this thing. Prior experience with a Warn 4700# trailer winch.Used a group 24 or 27 deep cycle /starter combo battery. Works great for a rolling vehicle. I have recycled my marine battery to trailer winch with no issues. If you are towing a trailer using a 7 pin receptacle there is a 12 volt pin for charging battery so no need to cut into light circuit. You do have trailer brakes and a break-away battery right. mike

Howard: Question seems quite clear to me. If you reread the original post, it clearly stated ....... "V6 cj5 with hard top" and "let's assume a rolling jeep on basically level ground." I'll admit I did not mention the length of pull. Likely never more than 20' from trailer end os deployed ramps.

Not sure how much more clear I can be but, I'll try to do better.

Mike: Trailer plug is a 7 pin. Need to get my truck wired up with the brake controller and the socket for the plug. Hoping to get to that next week. And, yes, the trailer does have brakes and the break away battery.

my bad but there's still room for ambiguity.

    I stand by my recommendation.

Sounds like your on top of things.I would think you could get at least 3-4 pulls on one battery charge.I have really enjoyed having a "bed winch" on my trailers .enjoy:beer:

    Follow up.........

Purchased a group 29 marine battery. Fully charged. Pulled the rolling 1966 V6 hardtop cj5 up the ramps and onto the trailer without issue. Trailer was even on a slight uphill angle. Not exactly a continuos pull as I stopped several times to turn the wheel to adjust the jeeps position.

Today, I used the trailer winch and same battery to pull the jeep off the trailer because I could not push it. Seems the brakes are a bit tight from sitting. Even as it started down the ramps, it would not really roll more than a few inches on it's own however, it will roll with the power of the winch pulling it. I did not recharge the battery between the loading and unloading operations.
