I have an 8274 warn sitting on a74 Cj 5, can I make the power connections to the solenoid and ground to the frame or block? Or is it better to just hook power to a double post battery?

You can ground anywhere, but power to the frame/block? Or are you wanting to run power from the starter (solenoid)?

Ground to block, power from solonoid, trying to keep it simple, and inexpensive.

Grounding to the frame or block works on paper.

But for an extreme electrical load like a winch, I suspect running dedicated heavy cables all the way would be more efficient in reality.

IMO double post at battery. Mine is wired that way since installed from mid 80's and never an issue. 8274 as well.
